I take the liberty to share this Kickstarter : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/12 ... ak-kitchen" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Juanjo Guarnido is a famous artists who worked for Disney and made the great comics "Blacksad"

Image

He's also a big fan of a Swedish band (that I like a lot ^^) : Freak Kitchen.

As a big fan we would like to produce a video clip for this band. He has chosen the French studio "Fortiche Prod'", who plans to use TVPaint Animation for the making of this video clip.

So don't hesitate to share this Kickstarter campaing !

To me this is another reminder that extraordinary drawing- and animationskills are not the most important requirements to make an interesting film :roll:

showoff animation is always a dubious goal, and let's face it, for what it's trying to be it's not all that skilful either.

The film is a clip video directed by a Freak Kitchen fan, for Freak Kitchen fans (which I am one), without any further prentention.

this kind of music is not really my cup of tea,
but I must admit the clip is very well done,
and enough "amazing" to make me watch it until its very last end !
:)
also, the successful 3D/2D intergation is one of the good point here to my eyes.

my question would be :
why the record company was not financing this stuff by its own (investment) funds ?
doesn't they (Freak Kitchen) sell enough CD/DVD (+ derived products) for that ?

anyway, they found the money (crowdfunding or so), the clip have been done in times,
and (I presume?) the studio has been paid, so nobody to complain,
it's finally a happy end here ...

clearly, making business in 21th century isn't the same than in the 20th !

I have to agree with Peter, Paul and ...
The animation and drawings are a pleasure to watch, the cg and compositing are extremly well done too, just the old film clips seemed like a bad choice to me. They don't match the rest in any kind.
Unfortunately the whole clip bored me. And I'm not THAT easy to bore. There are a lot of shots with a lot of action, but none of them brings the story forward or is interesting enough to carry the rest. They pretty much feel like a lot of nice shots edited together.

Freak Kitchen is not a well-known band and their label is as modest as they are. They do not have the exposure or the money that other famous bands can have (Metallica, AC/DC, etc.). You may look at their website : http://www.freakkitchen.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Juanjo Guarnido (the director who also animated this clip) is a big fan of their group. He contacted them once shyly, like any fan would contact any beloved artist.
They became friends and he even made some illustrations for their last album. This is just the story about how a good animator and illustrator met a metal band he liked and how they started to combine their both skills.

Juanjo wanted to create a clip for them and that's why he managed the crowdfunding. I know he also had to work a lot to raise the money and find funds.
anyway, they found the money (crowdfunding or so), the clip have been done in times,
and (I presume?) the studio has been paid, so nobody to complain,
it's finally a happy end here ...
I valid everything :)

I wouldn't deride this as "showoff animation" . It's very skillfully done .

Look, I am definitely NOT the audience this was made for ... I'm the most non-Heavy Metal person you could find , so there's nothing in terms of the music or subject matter that interests me here , but I can tip my hat to the skill of animator Juanjo Guarnido .

I've animated cereal commercials where I'm proud of the animation I've done , even though the subject matter is inane. It's a job. Apparently, in this case it was also a labor of love. Just because I don't love the same things , doesn't mean I can't recognize the skill and passion involved in producing the piece.

I stand by what I said... the scenes are selected to show a lot of exaggerated body and hair swaying with no other purpose but to show the animator's drawing skills, but he hasn't stood up to that claim-- some clips work better than others but I see too many disproportionate distortions of perspective that makes a character look long in one instance and pitifully chubby in the next. Since this work is all about meeting the challenge of anatomy drafting skills, I don't see how the animator has met the challenge.
