Translate "Faux-Fixe"

Faux-Fixe could use an English name.

My guess is it means 'Moving Hold', even though its used for cycles/ping-pong/etc now too. But maybe there's a better name out there...

I Agree. I always thought "Localized Loop" would work. Same with my pet peeve "Passepartout" which really is a "View Finder".

View Finder is good.
There were lots of propositions when we discussed the name of that feature, but I can't remember View Finder was one of them.

I think "View Finder" is the name of the little window you look through a camera to find you composition

So I would say the "view finder" in tvpaint is the area which is inside the camera square. So I would say "View Finder" is actually the exact opposite of the "Passe Partout". So thinking this way "View Finder" is a misleading name

What is "Passepartout"?
It is not the name of the area outside the camera square.I dont think tvpaint has a name for this(and I dont think there is a name for the area inside the square either. but this is another discussion)
"Passe partout" is the function of being able to fill in a color of you choice with the opacity of your choice in the area arounf the camera square, and not the area itself.
I have seen this function being called "Camera Mask" in other software(Toon Boom storyboard pro) but also Passe-Partout(Blender 3d software)

I dont think new english users of TVpaint understand "Faux-Fixe" So I agree a new name would probably be good.

LOL! Here we go again -- we've been through this already. My view of the issue is to concentrate more on the word's immediate recognition. And of course a viewfinder also does exactly what a mask does -- both have the purpose of bringing out what's within the mask -- not what the mask is made of or what color it is. I also understand that in this case we want to be able to see through the mask as well, which a viewfinder doesn't do (but neither does a passepartout). For crying out loud, anybody can come up with an argument to call it Rock Garden too, because rocks create a frame while remaining a part of the garden at the same time. When a user sees a label with the word "view" in it, it will signal that this has something to do with a camera. Shish...

Here we go again.
I like "Camera Mask" the best. Much Better than "Passe Partout"
I think "Camera Mask" signals it has something to do with the camera and a mask

Animation stands, particularly the Oxberry, always used rack over viewfinders and directors of photography and film directors commonly carried in their pockets portable viewfinders instead of using the embarrassing linked thumbs and index finger framing.

Another thing I noticed.

When you do:

File > Open...

you get a window where you can "Load" a project, this button should probably say "Open" like all other programmes call it. Simply to not confuse people who use more programmes than just TVPaint.

Indeed, it does describe the intended functionality, which was to have "holds" that aren't totally motionless.
Thus the faux-fixe = false-fix = not really "fixed" = slightly moving.

Obviously, since its creation, it has been used for a lot of other things :)
