tvp10 Q: computer bogging down

i'm trying to isolate/reduce what's causing tvp to bog down while working on a somewhat large project, so i'm curious if any tvp functions are known to be more taxing to the computer than others.
it's tricky- when newly opening the project tvp10 is very responsive, but minutes later the frame advance on my keyboard becomes way too sluggish, both the arrow keys and my quick keys to jump to markers and instance heads. to complicate matters- the issue occasionally goes into remission, only to return. timeline scrolling is less affected, although it comes and goes there too.
it's related to my using a 500+ frame 1920x1080 live-action movie as one of the layers ( the movie itself is 340mb and its sound is imported into tvp too). i've tried it both pre-loaded and not, sound on/off/deleted, i've deleted 2/3 of the footage image area i don't need, but the issue remains. as a test- deleting the layer entirely seems to solve everything, but i do need the layer to roto. the project is now 1.5 gb, but the sluggishness was an issue when the project was 400 mb. (i guess once i deleted image areas of the footage it automatically goes from a 'dependency'/reference footage to pre-loaded and therefore larger file.)
do any of the preview settings matter for navigating through the frames with the keyboard? i've switched them around but didn't notice improvement.
the project only has about 10 layers, with some image markers, bookmarks, opacity adjustments...
i've been closing other apps, and restarting the computer and the projects, but the issue returns.
so- i'd like to know if anyone knows of settings or functions that use more computer power than others, and then i can keep them in mind to avoid when possible.
i'm running os x 10.6.8, 2.53 processor, 4 gb memory, tvp 10
thanks for insights!
