brush step value controlled by pressure

Post by schwarzgrau »

I played a bit with the brush settings and thought it would be great If I could control the step value by pressure, rotation etc. of my stylus.

ok, it makes sense. But I'm not sure we can do it easily.

ya, if I think about how to "tell" the brush IN the line how much space he must leave empty it gets complicated. I'm happy if you considerate it, cause it seems really handy sometimes.

Of course. I try to create a ball-pen brush. Therefore I drew some lines, with varying pressure, on rough paper.
ball-pen lines on rough paper

If you look closely on the lines with low pressure you can see, there are no more lines, just dots.
Till now my brush is just a rough test. Just the HB Pencil by Peter Wassink, with some values slightly changed.

this is very interesting.
Maybe can we do something with the animbrushes to imitate the first image results, but yes, your request make sense for the future tools improvements.

ah of course. I could make an animbrush with some empty spaces at the end and link it to the pressure. Nice tip, thank you.

Recently I played around with the dotted line. I used no AntiAliasing to give it a "pixelish" look. I'm already happy, what you can achieve with that, but again it would be great to have more control over it, by controlling the steps of the dotted line.

You can use a custom brush for this.
Just make a dot with your tool and cut it to make a custom brush, then you can play with any parameters you want, even the step.

brainwave!...

(i have no time now to test it but i think this could work... at least have some interesting results)

if you make a custom brush consisting of a animated dot

and the animation consists of the dot moving away from its handle
then when you set angle to direction you could control step while drawing by connecting animation to pressure
so for instance when you press harder the dot moves closer to the cursor and when you press light the dot trails behind increasing the step.

you could also make a variation in which more dots will be appearing from the handle, thus increasing the dot density for that part of the pressure range

But unfortunately I can't control the step value. If you use the dotted line it seems to be controlled by the speed.

I'll try that. If I get some interesting results I'll post them here.

Unfortunately Erics idea doesn't seem to work like I and maybe him, expected. The spacing between the points doesn't change. It's a "normal" line, just a few pixels behind the cursor.

Just tested this:
Create an animation with a simple dot which is at the same position, one frame a dot, next frame empty, repeat. Make the instances successively longer so you get something like this:
dot dot 1 dot 2 dot 3 dot 4 dot 5 dot 6 ... (the number indicates empty frames).
Transform the instances into empty frames. Make this an AnimBrush. Set Animation to Pressure and Invert. Draw.
