No way to set selection source for magic wand?

I have just discovered a very sad fact: it's possible to set selection source for the Flood Fill tool, but there is no way to do the same for Magic Wand selection tool... or is it? if not - I think it's a must fix...

you are right.
Though if the source is on a single layer its easy enough to make the selection and then go to the layer where you want to use it.
I think thats why it wasn't done (yet); a selection travels with you on the active layer when stepping through them.
where the floodfill tool immediately applies itself.

for this reason the magic wand doesn't need the source.... but off course when the selection you want to make is spread over multiple layers you do need it!
feature request!

btw...
say you have your source (the elements that form the shape you want to select) really spread out over many many layers.
there are plenty workarounds:
consider creating a floodfill on an empty layer and then using this layer as a mask or...if you prefer... apply the magicwand to the thus created shape.

Peter, thanks
I understand the workarounds, but they are really too cumbersome and time consuming - it's something basic that should take a click to achieve
Even if my source is only one layer , but I need to work on another, it would really speed things up.

for some reason this link you gave doesn't allow to me read it...?

oops sorry !

anyway, all the thread demonstrated was that this is an old request
but it never hurts to remind the team :)

Probably this would help is a workaround but a working one and a 1 click solution as well.

But there is a much simpler method for what you do there,
and it does not require a script, it also uses less clicks because it can do an entire animation in one click.

-create a new layer under your anim.
-fill entire project surface (using either fill tool or filled rectangle.
-erase outside shape on the fill layer using painbucket+RMB with source set to either above or display. (expand 1-3, depending on the line thickness of the anim)
-undo
-select all frames (double click under the layer)
-enter.
