Changing frame numbers in timeline [Solved]

By default in TVP frame numbering starts with 0. Which is, sorry to tell - illogical nonsense... First frame should have number 1. Is there any way to change the way timeline displays frame numbers? If not - I will put it in feature requests. Thanks.

You set the first frame number in the starter screen. You can access this simply by holding down CRTL while you click on your TVP icon the next time you open TVP.

BTW, zero is not nonsense for everyone... if that would be the case this would have been corrected many moons ago. We all use this software in many different ways for many different purposes. If TVP had everything your way we would still be in the dark ages; drawing on paper, scanning, and using x-sheets.

Hi Paul
How do I do it on MAC? I cannot access the starter scene - tried holding Command key, or Control key - nothing happens...

What is exactly my way and why is it in dark ages? I love TVPaint, mainly for it being so good for those of us who actually do animation on paper, but after 25 years in animation and using all kinds of software and paper exposure-sheets, I cannot understand why would anyone use 0 as a number of the first frame - please give me an example, or explanation...

When your TVP is open, go to Edit>Preferences>Startup and select Startup Panel. Then the next time you open TVP it'll open with the Startup Panel first.

Mathematically oriented techie people have their reasons to think in zeros as the first number (even though they will be the first to tell you that zero is not a number) as do programmers. I think it's more a frame of mind; something they are used to as a concept of problem solving. I don't understand it myself but I know several people around here who are at home with that way of life and would kill if they were to loose it.

In Europe, and probably most countries around the world, the number one floor of a building is the floor above the one on the ground. In the US the logical number one is the ground floor from where you proceed to the second floor. The logical way for us all depends on what we grow up with and the other way sounds like nonsense. Only people who get to travel a lot stop calling other people's ways nonsensical.

Drawing on paper with everything that follows is far slower, more cumbersome and at a disadvantage to paperless animation because you miss out on many of the work flow shortcuts digital technology has to offer.

I am on a Mac and it works fine for me. I first click on the TVP icon then I hold down the control key.

try to use the "Search" tool of this forum before opening a new thread .
this "starting frame" question has already been tackled several times, like here. 8)

another nice illustration is the different approach in numbering houses around the world;

Please don't underestimate - I tried hard and didn't find it. I probably didn't try the "start frame" words combination, thanks.

I travel a lot - actually probably too much. I lived in 6 different countries on 2 different continents and fully understand all the house numbering logic and mathematical logic etc. But TVP is purely a software for making classical animation. I cannot imagine why anybody would call a physically existing frame (page) - number 0? In classical animation , no matter in what part of the world, the standard number on the exposure sheet was always 1...
Well - I'm not here to decide for everybody - I got my answer that its possible to change, and is eonugh for me.., thanks.

The number indicates the time from the start, in this case 0 makes sense, especially with time code mode.

I agree with you. I start my scenes on Frame 1 , because that is the first drawing in the scene. Nothing comes before Frame 1 , so why have a Frame 0 ? (But as Herve pointed out I guess it is useful for some sorts of video timecode editing )

I also agree that the Search function on the Forum is very difficult to find anything. It's often like looking for the proverbial "needle in a haystack" . I was trying to find the post that ZigOtto linked to because I knew that would have the answer for you , but searching for "Change Frame 0 to Frame 1" and several other combinations did not find the post I was hoping to link to for you.

This is what the little custom panel looks like:

clicking on Start Frame 1 will change it from 0 to 1.

I always set my Start Frame to 1 in the start up panel and for particular projects I will start up from a Template , which is set to start from Frame 1.
