Tile a pattern image file? [RESOLVED]

Post by bleupencil »

Hi everyone,

I am not sure if it's because I'm typing the wrong search terms, or if this topic just hasn't come up. It's pretty basic yet I can't seem to wrap my head around how to do it!
Admittedly I am still not very well versed with this program and am stumbling my way through working out how to use it for my own ends.

What I would like to do is import a tileable image file such as the example below, and repeat it so that it fills either the whole layer or part of the image I've traced with the selection tool.

I know how to do this in Photoshop with the Edit>Fill feature and the marquee tool or a mask, but is there a way to replicate such a simple process in TVP?

Your help will be much appreciated, and if this is indeed a repeated topic, please would you point me to the right thread? Thanks so much!

If I understand you well, you want to define that image as a paper, don't you ?

If so, you simply have to open it into TVPaint, then go into Windows => paper panel => scroll at the end of the papers list, right click in the "empty space" and "create a new paper". Here we are =)

don't think so elodie. because then you would loose the colors.

One way to do it is to import the image as custombrush and then go to:
The FXstack > the KeyFramer > Render >

choose as Source Custombrush
activate Fill

and finally

Apply fxstack

import the image as custombrush
Select the flood fill
in the tool panel activate "brush wrapping" and select option "tile" in the "width" and "height" parameters.
click on the frame

selection tool is but one way to do it.

and instead of tracing with a selection tool
a maybe more natural way is to first simply paint the desired area on a separate layer and then apply the effect on that layer using the preserve transparency button in the menu bar (last button on the right)

there is usually more then one way to achieve certain results in TVP and it is often worth while to do some research with method is the most efficient, for in animation small time savings do add up.

off course, forgot that one!
nicely illustrates my "more then one" point :D

Load as custombrush,
activate grid, set to "Use Brush Size",
paint happily where you want.

One more way to do it :)

Oh wow! Thanks you guys, I wasn't expecting such a flood of responses. But yes, I wanted to keep the colours as well, so the paper approach wasn't quite what I was looking for. The rest of them sound pretty good though, so I will give it a go and get back to you.

Thank you all so much for your help! :D

Tried loading as a custom brush and using flood fill, and also using it through the FX stack. Both these techniques did not confuse me (hooray!) and worked like a charm. Thank you all once again for your help :)
