FADE TO TRANSPARENCY

Hello everyone! I need help fast. It's for an illustration not an animation. I have a gradient background which takes up the entire frame - lighter color on the upper left to darker color on the lower right.
Is there anyway that I can make the edge of the light color fade out to transparency? I noticed in the gradient menu at the top there is a selection that reads, "APen to Transparent," but I must not be using it right because it won't work for me. There are two colors and no transparency although I can see transparency evident in the "pick color" bar.
What am I not doing correctly?
Any suggestions or instruction you can provide? I would appreciate it very much.
