If you keep your character on its own layer and assign the layer a color (the little "c" button way to the left of the layer head) then you can hide the layer by clicking on the corresponding color at the bottom of the layer panel.
But you should also explore the "off pegging" feature of the light table. Using that, you can temporarily grab any frame and reposition it to fit your current need. When doing that you can also tilt or change the image's size. After tracing it in its new position you click it off. This feature emulates the classical trick of taking a previous drawing off the animator's pegs to trace it in a new position and then returns the drawing to its original place -- only TVPaint does it better and offers more possibilities that the analog world can't do.

There's also a
plugin by Youngmonkey that lets you open a separate window to place you reference drawing in.

Ahh!! The Picture Palette (and the original PP). I have 9 of those and use them every day.

Wow - so I can group layers! Another feature I hadn't spotted. Excellent.

Just keep in mind that they still act like visible layers. So if you Shift select a group and turn them off (red) and turn them back on (green), whichever hidden layer you thought was off will now be on.
