Creating a custom icon for brushes.

Hi Guys,
I was trying out some new brushes and would like to know how to create custom icons for them.
I managed to do it by creating a brush from the icon and then attaching the brush characteristics I wanted into the same button but keeping the icon.
That worked out fine but was wandering if there wasn't an easier way to do it and also make this icon available in the icon set so one can easily create variations of the same brush and select that icon.
