Illustration in Layers (Quick video tutorial)

ALWAYS THINK IN LAYERS

I thought you might get a kick out of this little video tutorial on building an illustration in multiple layers. One reason I came to work this way was because of how shots are done in feature films in Hollywood. To get the most control, every highlight, shadow or puff of smoke might have its own layer. While that's going a bit overboard, there are some interesting ways layers can be used in Illustration to make life easier and give more control over the final result.

This image combines 3D and 2D elements, but is all finished in TVpaint.

ALWAYS THINK IN LAYERS

Let me know what you think.

I agree. I'm not even a professional and I find having everything on layers sooooooooo much easier!

One does learn to navigate the stack of layers fairly quickly after a bit and color coding them helps too.

Heheh I don't think I even learned the value of layers in general until 2001 or so. :D
