Hi, still new to TVP i find things sometimes a bit confusing.

Now there is two things that puzzles me.

1. I'm trying to do the simplest thing, I want to fill a square with white color???? Nothing I tried seems to work

2. When I marke-selects I have much trouble de-selecting the selected-marke...in PhotoShop I just hit Esc, ?

is the square already existing ? if not, use the RectangleFill drawing tool, set A color to White, and draw your square ("Shift" key hold to force the rectangle to be squared),
if already drawn (existing by outlines), use the floodfill tool and click inside to fill it with the A color, (mode = behind, fill = Density only, Expand = 1, these settings to prevent antialiasing artefact between the line and the filled area)

if your question is : "how to deselect a previously made selection area on the canvas?",
you will have 2 choices :
a) click on the enable/disable Stencil button to toggle the current selection,
b) hit Shift + BackSpace as shortkey for Shape Select : Clear.

NB: in tvpa, Selection and Stencil are the 2 sides of the same coin,
(with the aim of preserving or delimiting accessible area with painting tools as with FX),
so to toggle (enable/disable) a Selection, toggle the Stencil button.

Frankly, after visiting your blog and seeing how accomplished you are with various animation software and adding to that your technically sophisticated track record (good works, BTW) I had a hard time believing you were serious with those noobie questions. So now that ZigOtto has initiated you into our technology, do you have some plans for hand-drawn 2D animation projects?

Thank you, I kinda sneaked away to your website to, and saw some beautiful stuff there Paul. loved it.

as for the technical issues I have with TVP, well I'm really putting my chin out here when saying this, but I have used many softwares over the years, some very technical some not so technical. With that in mind I have to say that TVP, although its a great software, has given me the moste problems when it comes to logick and everyday tasks.

copy Paste (ctrlC, ctrlV) is more or less a universal law, so way break it )
Shift - backspace to de-select...well I need to drop my pen to do this..why??
You need to change the default on the fill tool to have it FILL?? why???

the list grows a bit bigger, BUT before the stones starts to fall on me I want to say that TVP still is the best 2Dsoftware I have tried, and I'm sticking to it even if its a bit of a hard love right now

2D projects....well to be honest, I'm not really good enough at 2D. I more use 2D to solve my 3D animations. I do feel that I more and more are falling in love with 2D and yes, why not, in the future how knows..

when are the film due to be finished paul?

I work with just two software applications; TVP and Sony Vegas for video editing and sound. Nothing else, so to me it's the most logical way to do things. Note ctrl/K where you can change many key commands to your liking. You might have noticed that all questions asked here get answered quicker than some can finish asking them.

My film, My Dog Tulip is completed and is awaiting some festival entry confirmations, but basically I am counting on showing it at Annecy this spring for sure.
Then it will have a public premiere in London later in the summer and NY in the fall. The second film, temporarily called Sailing Alone Around the World is slated for release in 2011 -- we have just barely started it; not even finished with the script yet.

I must say that I do agree with Pigbelly on this. TVP is quite hard to switch to mostly because of this strange logic. But this problem would be solved if we were able to assign our own shortcut keys using 'ctr' alt' and 'shift' combinations. So we could bring our custom made shortcuts keys closer to those used in most mainstream and professional graphics software out there.

Is there any good reason why these combinations are not possible in TVP ?

Uhm, they are possible? Look again into the key configure panel. All available keystroke combinations are listed on the left.

I am referring to shortcut combinations of all three.
The key configure panel shows 'crl' and 'shift' combinations but no 'alt' possibilities...

Ah, you're right, I had missed that point.
OTOH, 3-key-combinations are a bit clumsy, even in Photoshop ... and it even has 4-key-combinations.

That can be true, but I do use them a lot. And it would make the workflow so much better when switching between other software applications (for example by Adobe) and TVP.

I don't know much about Adobe products but I do know they've been around from the days of computer apes. If anyone who came on the scene with software Adobe never cared to develop, do the inventors of the new products have to abide by the conventions of the apes even if they have discovered some better ways of doing things?

Just a small example: what on earth is so great about Ctrl/c, ctrl/v, and ctrl/x??? Fortunately TVP allows us to create our own key commands and I have simplified this stone age convention by leaving out the two finger ctrl-plus-another-key. Try it someone, and within an hour you will be amazed how simple it is to use just one finger instead of two for such common commands.

If you would want other industries to follow your logic, we wouldn't have automatic transmissions, we'd have rear view mirrors still sticking out of our bumpers and no roofs over the driver's seat.

To me it is not a question of who has the smartest shortcuts. No doubt yours are the best.

I want my shortcuts to be compatible and easily changed to my own preferences. So if I'm switching between
applications I can choose similar shortcuts if I want. (Even if they are stupid or from the stone age of computer monkey software etc.)
Makes it so much more comfortable switching to TVP after having worked for a few weeks in another app.

So my question is; why can't we apply 'alt' key combinations ? Is there a special reason for that ?
