Canon Plug-in

Does anyone know if the Canon Plug-in will work with any of the newer Powershot cameras, such as the A470, A590, A1000, SD1100, or E1? None of these are on the list in the manual for TVP9. In fact, the cameras listed in the manual are now only available used on Ebay and I wanted to get a new camera. Thanks for any help.

I just found this on the internet:
The following Canon PowerShot cameras do not support remote capture operation and therefore will not work with stop motion:
A series: A410, A420, A430, A450, A460, A470, A530, A540, A550, A560, A570 IS, A580, A590 IS, A610, A630, A650 IS, A700, A710 IS, A720 IS, A1000 IS, A2000 IS
Digital ELPH/IXUS: SD30, SD40, SD400 (Digital IXUS 50), SD430, SD450 (Digital IXUS 55), SD500 (Digital IXUS 700), SD550 (Digital IXUS 750), SD600, SD630, SD700 IS, SD750, SD770 IS, SD790 IS, SD800 IS, SD850 IS, SD870 IS, SD880 IS, SD890 IS, SD900, SD950 IS, SD990 IS, SD1000, SD1100 IS
SX series: SX10 IS, SX1 IS
Other: TX1, E1
The problem is that this pretty much eliminates most or all of the new Canon cameras aside from the G10 which is very pricey.

nb: TVP 9 has not been tested with G10, especially because Canon did not send us this camera ... so please make some tests before buying anything.

Thanks Fabrice,
I just bought a used G2 off Ebay so I hope it works OK. I think that some of the problem with the new Canons is that their remote capture software does not work with Vista so perhaps that is why the new Canons do not offer the remote capture option.

In fact, most of the problems comes from Canon itself since their SDK are not regulary updated, and the Mac SDK is still inexistant ...
Also, don't count on their technical support to lend us their lastest camera model.
Anyway, in regards of the informations provided by Canon, the
Powershot G2 should work without any problem.
Tony, please report your tests and results here, it could help some people who will be in the same situation in the future.

Well I got my Canon G2 today. The good news is that TVPaint is able to communicate with it and take photos. The bad news is that when I click "settings" from the Video Grabber panel, I get a fatal error that then crashes TVPaint.
Here are the details of the error:
AppName: tvp animation 9 pro.exe AppVer: 9.0.4.0 ModName: videocanon.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00009b3a
I have the latest version of TVPaint even though it says 9.4
I really need to adjust the settings to get the image quality better. The camera works very well with the Canon Remote Capture software that came with it so I do not think it is the camera or the usb connection to my computer.
Any help would be appreciated.

hi Tony,
- which version of your canon plugin, is it the last one, v2.0 (the one embeded with the tvpa install software) ?
- have you tried a test with the older version, v0.99 ?
- what "shooting mode" is set on your canon camera : Program AE, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, Manual ?

I am using the plug-in that comes with TVP 9
I tried to unzip the .99 version of the plug-in but my unzip program said it was a bad archive so I could not try the old plug-in.
The camera has to be in Play mode when connected to the computer so changing the program modes seems to have no effect. I think you have to use the settings on the plug-in to adjust these properties when connected to the computer.

About the Shutter / Aperture options, can you set the shooting mode ( directly on the camera ) to the manual mode or Tv mode or Av mode ( if they are available ).
Think to unselect and reselect the device "Canon v2.0" in the popup menu after you change the mode on the camera.
The Canon SDK says that the shooting mode must be in one of these modes to have the Shutter/Aperture options available.
that was the plugin developper's answer when having some troubles with my camera recognition,
(shutter speeds and aperture settings not available), but I imagine your problem is probably different.
Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try the "Manual" mode of the camera, if not already done .

Thanks ZigOtto,
But I tried all three modes and TVP still crashes when I press the select button on the Video Grabber panel. Perhaps it is something with my computer. I am still pretty sure the camera is OK since it works well with Stop Motion Pro.
Thanks again for your trouble.
BTW, do you have a copy of the old Canon plug-in? The one that is posted in the forum comes up as corrupt when I try to unzip it.
Solution

I think I found a solution. I posted the story here in case other have any issues with the Canon plug-in.
So with no further success, I decided to try the Canon plug-in that comes with the Creation Pack. It turns out that this plug-in is updated. Everything was working perfectly and I was thrilled. But then I tried it a day later and the plug-in would not connect to the camera anymore. I tried everything, including re-installing TVPaint but the plug-in was still having a problem. But at least it wasn't causing the fatal error that the old plug-in was. So I contacted Mike, the developer of the plug-in, and through some trial and error we decided that it might be a problem with one of the plug-in settings that I changed when I used it the first time. So I deleted everything in the config.ini file that had to do with the plug-in (essentially putting my config back to the way it was when the plug-in first worked). And good news; it works fine now. So it appears that there was a setting in the config that the plug-in did not like. If it happens again, and I can track down which setting it is, I will post it here. Right now I think it might have been changing the cameras flash setting but I am still not sure. Thank you to Mike and ZigOtto for all the help.
