How well does TVpaint work with XP 64-bit?

Post by stiletto »

Have a mid-power computer that I used to use only for animating, but it got turned into my standard computer and because of that doesn't run the larger animations as well as it used to. My solution is to have two hard drives, two instances of windows, and just switch between them.

Since I won't be doing much else with this second hard drive aside from animating, and since I have 4 gigs of ram, I'm considering using XP 64-bit on it so I can get as much access to my ram as possible (and I'm pretty sure my processor is 64-bit capable, might as well take advantage of it). Wondering what the official word and what people's experiences with TVPaint on XP 64 bit have been. I love TVPaint much more then any other animation software I've ever used, but at the same time it's probably one of the buggiest I've worked with. Does it work just as well with 64 bit?

Oh, and I have version 8.5, believe I'm allowed to download the update, just haven't gotten around to it yet. So my question relates mostly to version 9.

Hi Stilleto,

TVP 8 works on XP-64 but doesn't take all advantage of the 64-bit technology. TVP 9 is more capable than TVP 8 on this point, especially because it manages the memory in a better way (less memory fragmentation on windows as explained in some other topics)

Btw, saying that TVP is buggy without explaining the bugs enountered is not relly helpful for us ... We are always ready to improve the product as soon as a bug is found, so please just tell us which problems you have encountered.
If you have an 8.5.x version, you can freely update it to the lastest one : 8.6.4. It was uploaded last week on our server. ( should be less buggy, for sure ;) )

I remember you saying somewhere that TVPaint is a 32 bit program, and thus I wouldn't expect it to take advantage of pluses of a 64 bit system. It can though use up to 3.5 gigs of memory, which is where 64 bit could help me here. While TVP using the advantages of 64 bit architecture would be great, right now I just want to be sure that it doesn't run in some diminished capacity on 64 bit, and therefor would be similar to 32 and but then be able to get 3.5 gigs to TVP.

The bugs themselves are not the type that consistently or repeatedly happen, a lot are rather hard to describe. Things like a certain brush will suddenly stop working until I restart the program, or suddenly not being able to change the color I'm painting with until I restart it. I also seem to lose tablet functionality more often when using TVP then other programs.

When I say bugs, in general I mean when some little or larger aspect of TVP stops working, for no reason that I can see, and then works fine when it is restarted. I'm no programmer, but I wouldn't think "I was animating today and sound stopped playing until I restarted the program" would help much in getting it fixed.

As for upgrading, with 8.5 what would I have to do to get version 9? I bought 8.5 just a few months before it came out.

Thanks!

I can't speak for XP 64, but TV Paint runs quite well under Vista 64. I haven't run into any issues yet with it. Would be nice to have a real 64-bit version of TV Paint sometime :-)

TVPaint 8 work with XP 64-bit excellent! Greatest thing is that TVPiant see all RAM (in my computer is 5 GB), so You can open many projects, or work with big full HD or 2k projects quickly!
