Scale and translate, how?

Hi all
I'm new to TV animation, so don't kill me for asking stupid questions:-)
I don't know if this it the right thread for this(probably not:-) but here goes.
Scale and translate....how the hell do ya do it ????
)
I have been trying and testing, reading the manual, the FAQ...only thing I have found is the select brush thing which, well frankly it sucks
)) (sorry)
But there must be a better way to scale and translate parts of the illustration, so make me look like an idiot and tell me how to do it
)
cheers

Well I kinda got an answer here
After reading a bit in the forum I got the customBrush explained, and it doesn't suck as much as 30 minutes ago
STILL I would have preferred a normal scale and translate tool, but hey I'm not a software developer so I back off
thanks for all the great people out there helping dummies like me, thanks
cheers

What's scale and translate? I've never heard the expression before. It must be something from your current application of choice. Which is it?

Scale and translate are common concepts of the Adobe tribe of software, like Photoshop etc. I must say that I still prefer them over all others I know.

So what scales and what gets translated? This computer nomenclature drives me nuts because the expressions seldom mean what happens on the screen.

Ah, OK. Something selected in PS can be scaled and translated immediately.

Of course, now here's a better explanation from Wikipedia:
As an example, the Cobb-Douglas functional form has constant returns to scale when the sum of the exponents adds up to one. The function is:
\ F(K,L)=AK^{b}L^{1-b}
where A > 0 and 0 < b < 1. Thus
\ F(aK,aL)=A(aK)^{b}(aL)^{1-b}=Aa^{b}a^{1-b}K^{b}L^{1-b}=aAK^{b}L^{1-b}=aF(K,L)

scale = resize
translate = move

Now that makes sense. Thanks Peter for the excellent movement, which makes resize to me now.
Resize and move....how the hell do ya do it ????

Tommie,
I use the CutBrush Tools Panel.

Tommie:
Check pages 7-24 and 7-25 of the manual.
On the Main Panel, the tools you ask about are just to the right of the Magic Wand Cut Brush, above the Re Do and Un Do buttons.
Now let me ask you - why be so belligerent? Saying the software sucks won't gain you any fans, no matter how many smiley faces you put on your posts. I happen to like the software.
For those who asked:
Scale means to change the size of the art.
Translate means to move it up or down. In 3-d, translate means to move a shape on the X,Y, or Z channel. X channel: left to right. Y channel: up or down. Z channel: closer or further away from the user's POV (or camera.)
In 3-d language, what I am calling a shape is called Geometry. Modeling in 3-D is just a matter of creating shapes out of combinations of boxes, pyramids, spheres and other shapes.

hmmm...
I've been using photoshop since 1994, and I never came across the term "translate". I did in 3D apps, but not in photoshop.
a search for the word "translate" in the help files of Photoshop CS3 yielded not even one entry that was related to transforming, shifting, scaling, moving or any alteration whatsoever of a graphic.
Tommie, you can use the tools
hereto ease the work with CutBrush

Hi all, and thanks for all the answers
first
GoChris:
well sorry that you got offended, just that I was soooo frustrated, I do still think that stuff sucks, and I don't see the problem with saying that. Think we shouldn't be so overprotective of our software's:-) But yes I will guard my tongue in the future. I will however use as many similes as I wish (unless the moderator tells me otherwise)
The tools you are talking about GoChris is moving my whole layer, and the scale thing is really strange, cause it kinda scales only the frame that is played. Cause the lightbox(onionskin) drawings are the same size as before.
Paul:
Well the CutBrush feels really strange to use, it makes my lines look "pixilated" and when I try to fix that using subpixel it gets a bit blurry...very strange. Is there no other way to "Cut" or/and "Move" things in TVPanmPro.
Scale and Translate thing :.)
Well its a 3D thing I guess, and as pointed out what I was looking for was Scale and Move.....and in photoshop that is very easy and I was hoping that it would be as easy in TVP...
Still havent found a good way of doing scale and move, but TVP is overall a really good software, just that things like this buggs the hell out me sometimes..
love ya all

every modification you make, whether it's with the scale/pan/rotate tools, or via the FX stack, the modification applies for the current FRAME only. if you want the modification to occur on the whole LAYER, then do this:
1. Make your modification on the chosen frame
2. Undo
3. double-click under the layer, to select all frames in the layer.
4. press ENTER. Enter repeats your last function. and since your whole layer is selected the function will apply to all frames.
in the same manner, if you want to apply the modification on only SOME of the frames, click-drag under the desired frame, and then ENTER. Or, alternately, you can just move your time-cursor, and click ENTER. you can this do this for every current frame in view, as long as the last function you made was the particular modification.

In the tool options panel, when you select the CutBrush tool, you will see a few checkboxes. Check the Smoothing one on before you go on using the tool.
And I agree, the scale tool is not great. particularly when you're working on large-dimension files. A transform-from-selection tool will be optimal. It'll be a good thing if you put a proper request in the 'Feature Requests' forum. TVP knows how to listen to these requests.
