What is the best choice for the graphics card for mac pro 8 core if TVP is your number one tool?
Is the basic ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT enough or is it better choose NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT?

There was some problems with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT and Open GL before, but I've been using my TVP without open gl and I'm not sure is that a problem.

If you buy your Mac ONLY for TVPAP, the ATI is already overkill :)

So choose your graphics card depending on what else you'll be doing with it.

About OpenGL: there are different problems with ATI cards than with nVidia cards, but there are problems too :(

i would definately to a 8800 because the extra cash for it is not much and u get
much more support for other apps usually used with tvp ..(at least from me and my colleagues...)
AE,AI,Motion..

and dont forget that Houdini is about to go out for macs :D...
(what's better than combining .a great non procedural 2d artistic app (TVP) and the most softisticated procedural 3D app (Houd) )!
