problems with repeating frames

I'm having a few problems with TVPaint - when I try to extend a layer by grabbing the edge and stretching it (increase layer length) and choose Repeat it works, but any changes I make afterwards to individual frames will affect every frame after it in the layer. I'm wondering if there's a way to stop this?
Also, is there a way to change the cache location? At each start up I get the error message

Can't create cache file:
C:\tvpaint4868.1063.tmp
Use default path

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

hi Emily,
for the 2nd part of your questions, go to Edit/Preferences/Temp Directory : Set ...
choose preferably an empty partition on a fast disk, then OK.

about your first part, sorry but I can't help, cause I didn't really understand what's about ...
:)

Sorry for the delay in more information -

I can do some screen grabs if it'll help. Basically - say I draw a ball in one frame, then repeat that frame so I have 20 frames of the same image. On frame #2 I move the ball up . The problem is - the ball has now moved up on frame #2, #3, #4, etc. for the rest of the layer. Every edit I do affects every frame after it. This happens whenever I stretch a layer and repeat the frames, or use the animator bin to duplicate the frame. This is causing me huge problems - sometimes the only solution is to put each frame on to a different layer to modify it which is getting insane.. help!

If I get your problem right, you creating an exposure of the same frame. So in order to have seperate frames, you need to break the exposure.
after you stretch the layer, select all frames (double click in the blank space under the frames), and once it is all selected go to Layer > Break Instance.
This should create images out of the one-piece exposure.

several ways to go after your 1rst drawing in frame one (the ball) :

- grab it as brush, add empty frames (stretch with "add empty frames" option),
then draw/animate using your custombrush (the ball), and enabling the LightTable,
- draw frame 1, add an empty frame*, go to next and draw frame 2, add an empty frame,
go to next and draw frame 3, add an empty frame, go to next and draw frame 4, ....
- stretch the layer (Repeat mode) so your first ball is hold over all the frames,
then KeyFrame the animlayer to move the layer/ball,
- grab the first ball as brush, stretch the layer to the needed length, select all frames
and clear them, then use the Keyframer to move the custombrush (the ball),
- ...

* to manage Frames/Instances in the timeline window, I suggest you to download
and install the handy Instance-Panel from the Contents Sharing section,
(if you haven't already got it, of course).
