Colour pickers

Post by Jeremy Richard »

Here are a few colour picker tools I came accross, which I thought I'll share.

Useful when wanting colours from references outside TVPaint's interface (specially with TVPaint Standard and no Image Library). Well, at least until I saw D.T. Nethery's useful tip on importing references into the mixer.
Spoiler : Image reference into the mixer :

But anyway, just in case, here's a list of offline colour picker tools (in no particular order and by no means exhaustive):

Just Color Picker
(Windows and Mac)
  • show colour in real-time
  • saves the selected colours
  • can define colour sample area
  • can test colour on text
  • different colour format
Colorpicker
(Windows, Mac and Linux)
  • shows colour in real-time (can be enabled in the settings)
  • can creates colour books
Color Picker utility in PowerToy
(Windows)
  • shows colour in real-time
  • can zoom (with the scroll wheel) to pick precisely a colour
  • different colour format
The PowerToy utility also has a Screen ruler and File Explorer add-on that enables preview of SVG files in Window's file explorer, for example.

ColorPicker
(Windows. It is the utility used in PowerToy)
  • can create a colour from an area
  • can name colours (can be enabled in the settings)
You need to activate the picker to either pick one value or select an area.
The default shortcut to enable to picker is LeftCtrl + Cancel. The Cancel key is also called 'Pause' or 'Break'. Depending on the keyboard, it could be located at the top right hand corner of the keyboard, on the same row as of the F1, F2, F3, etc keys.

Rickrack

Not a colour picker but a colour palette generator. Amongst other things it can:
  • create palette based on harmony rules
  • import and export Photoshop or GIMP colour palettes
  • generates colours from an image
  • can save multiple colour palettes within the interface
