But the best thing to do is....

Pick a good opensource player with reactive developers (VLC comes to mind), and ask them to add the frame by frame playback, explaining them WHY you need it.

You can get rid of quicktime in your workflow :)

You better do it now so you have an alternative when quicktime is gone for good...

But do you really believe that writing them this request will make it happen? It has been debated in zillions of blogs all over the universe; if they knew how to do it, it surely would have been done by now. BTW, I think QT has terrible colors and wouldn't be surprised if it is because of this. Perhaps the volunteers behind VLC don't want to sacrifice their color quality for this feature.

I think VLC supports frame by frame viewing already

You made my heart skip a beat... I downloaded the latest version 2.0.8 with high hopes...but it's not quite there yet, although better than I last remember. It's improved in the way you can do a more detailed search but I wouldn't call it frame by frame scrubbing yet. It does prove that they are working on it though. :D

Guess what! I'll take what I said back :D When using my ShuttlePro I can indeed advance VLC frame by frame. Not literally scrubbing by dragging the progress bar like you can with QT, but everybody should have ShuttlePro by now anyway.

You can also "scrub" with the mousewheel (although I think it does in 3 second increments). Maybe this is adjustable.

- On Mac the mousewheel sets the volume (i think this can be changed)
- The smallest increment is indeed 3 sec, and not adjustable anywhere.

Or under View check Advanced Controls and use the red arrow button. Again, only forward though.

Actually, it can be modified via the vlcrc file, which is a text file which contains all possible configuration values (on Linux, it's under $HOME/.config/vlc, probably in a similar place on OS X and Windows). Unfortunately, you are still only restricted to integer values for seconds. The mousewheel action can be modified also.

I split the thread, in order to not bothering the 10.5 issues thread :)
