The knurled grips on those plugs were drawn with the 'helix guide', which is meant for drawing helices and spirals. It's good for drawing spiral staircases, rifled cannon barrels, twisted rope, worm gears, as well as screw and bolt threads too.

As much as I like my freehand line smoother, it's nice to have the extra control of a bezier guide, so I made one.

Just yesterday, I created a bezier guide for my tablet driver hack - which means I can now get all the precision and control of a bezier line in a vector program into every brush stroke in a bitmap program.

So, here's the result of testing out that bezier guide for a hard circle brush. On the right is my reference (which I had to trace to get perfect linework for colouring later.) I think I'll soon modify my driver hack to make those same perfect helix spirals so I don't have to trace.

If you look really carefully, you can see that a drill bit is like two sharp chisels, twisted and forged together. Those sharp chisel-blades carve into the material while the spiral groove provides a space for the waste material to travel as the spinning chisels displace the shavings upwards.

It's really amazing when you consider how much thought goes into a well-designed drill bit, especially when it's made as a single moving part that is both mass-produced and practically disposable, costing only a few bucks to replace.

p.s. WACOM makes the best tablet hardware in the world but their software and drivers suck.
