Animations made entirely in TVPaint

Here's a short animation project I did for Sesame Street in The Netherlands.
On my blog there is a peek behind the curtain with some, sketches, storyboard and linetest work. All done in TVPaint except for the multiplane effect in the finished version because I couldn't figure out how with so many elements.

The cut on 12:00 to a CU doesn't work too well because the flowers on the right remain in the same position as in the LS, where the bee flew off the screen at the top. Then when we cut, the bee is center top while the flowers have changed little, which is what makes this look like a jump cut; the bee jumped back. All this needs is for the bee to fly in from the bottom, but it would be even better if the flowers weren't there and there would be a cloud or two in the format to delineate a complete cut to a new location above the girl's head -- where the bee flew to... and there it is, flying up now (from the bottom).

Paul, you are absolutely right! I tried to keep the bee after the cut in an approximate position on the screen but I didn't take into account the yellow flowers in background. I suppose they didn't bother me because they don't have much contrast with white of the background. But the cut would have more seamless with you suggestions taken into account.

Another lesson learned. Next time I'll do better!

I just remembered that I did try a version where the bee was in the exact same place on screen during the cut (it was just bigger after the cut) but I didn't like it when I sat back and looked at it. I realise now that that might have been because of what you just said. Those flowers in the BG made that cut stagger too much, I guess. Sometimes I just need a fresh pair of eyes.
And a better brain.

It's not so much the size of the bee, which would still make it a jump cut (it would jump from small to big; a one frame zoom which is a jump cut) but if you keep the bee in, then in the next scene it should not be on stage but enter from the direction it was last seen. Basically the rule of thumb is that you have to completely reposition your camera and change your lens often.

Delightful, smart and fun. A good case of purposeful and tasteful integration of live action footage and animation, which is so rare. And finally, I even liked the fast pace even though it suffers from that French to English subtitle problem of too many words to read. I wonder if a good translator would know how to say the same in shorter sentences, but we always have the pause button too.
