For me it works quite intuitive.
what is it exactly that you find cumbersome, maybe we can think of something to improve this... or do you have ideas for a better method altogether?

i already found part of your answer myself:

I'm aware I'm bumping a very old thread here, I did a search for feature requests about grouping layers in folders. This seems to be the most on topic one.

And very old (2008), but still relevant.

The colour-groups we have are nice, but folders are still something I'm sure many people still want to have. Are there any plans for folders, or is it simply not going to happen?

From what i know there are certainly plans to implement this, as this is a very old and popular request, but i was told that the current architecture doesn't allow it, so it involves creating a whole new layer engine,
alas.... its definitely not gonna be the next update

Thanks for the info Peter!
It sounds like the current architecture doesn't allow much ;)
I'll be patient for few more years.

Peter, you explained everything correctly :)

Would that be 10.5 or 11?

Is there any news on the "creating folders" subject? And whether if it is going to be an option in the next Tvpaint release?

meanwhile, I think something could be done to "mimic" a grouping function in the current architecture,
at least, a way (workaround) to Preview an FXstack on a color-group of layers,
why not to add "Group ..." in the Image Source options :
ImageSource_Groups.png
ImageSource_Groups.png (13.5 KiB) Viewed 27801 times
(and so on to the KeyFramer/Render/Source option),

with this new Source option, we will be able to select/stack one (or several) group(s) in a new empty layer,
(keeping the layers order and fusion mode unchanged), then, hiding the origin group, to preview an FX on this layers selection,
... and when satisfied, to delete this temporary (pre-merged) layer, and to apply the FX to the selected group(s),
and so to keep the original (separated) layers structure.

it's actually already possible, but we have to stack the target layers one by one,
in several Image Sources, it's actually tedious, adding "Group List" in the Source popup menu
would make it easier and so much more friendly.

Already in the to do list :D
(but this is not as simple as it seems)

this is somewhat possible already
last week i made a custom panel with two layer specific tools, one for coloring and one for line drawing

i had to color a line animation and lots of frames had leaks so i had to constantly switch layer and tool.
this not only cumbersome but i also made lots of errors where i'd accidently color on the lanimlayer.
then i thought to combine the two and made the panel where each tool would jump to the right layer it worked like a charm.
i click the line button and i am on the animation layer with the line tool.
and i click the fill button to be on the color layer with the paint bucket.

so it became a one click switch.

to make it easier to set-up, it would help if you could add specific layers, like you can in the fxstack.
