thats right. Like Zigotto said, the blue pencil's only purpose is to rough out poses and animation, not for fine detailing or clean up.
It would be the equivalent of a 6b, really greasy pencil. The more I look at it the more I think it looks like a pastel actually. not the wanted effect though. I will have to tweak it a bit more.

I hope you will keep sharing your findings. the way you drew Merlin looks really awesome, shows that real paperlike character animation must be a possibility with TVpaint.

Hi Tantalus
if you look at my Merlin drawing on the first page you can see that the vertical lines are very very thin compared to the horizontal ones.
I think that the problem is due to the angle option in the pencil. I thought I could disable the angle by setting it to 0 and none but it seems to still be affecting it.

what's your Aspect value ?
(probably too low), try to :
- increase the aspect value (try something between 40% and 70%)
- (and/or) change the Angle value (try something between 40° and 70°)
- (and/or) connect the Angle to Direction,
- (and/or) tweak the profile curves of the Angle and Aspect settings.
- ...

disable the Aspect first, or set it to 100%.

thanks Zigotto, yes it was the Aspect thing. I will update my first post with a new Traditool bar. Also I am darkening the blue and adding Hervé's Text align left for storyboard or animatic people

by the way, Olive,
looking at your Merlin drawing, I can see some jaggedness in the thinner lines, like the very thin vertical lines are not aliased.
In case it's something that you noticed too, try to have Subpixel option checked in the preferences panel. It will smooth it out. (unless you're drawing on a TabletPC, in which case leave Subpixel unchecked)

yes this has been fixed, it was due to the Aspect of the brush however i am on tablet Pc and interestingly enough I have to have the subpixel on or I do get jagged lines.

could some repost the old version? I think I screwed up with the new version or it just doesn't look the same at all using an Intuos3 tablet.
It looks reallly really different from the sketch I did on the first page.

To Zig:
I tried out your two pencils one using paper.
After changing to another tool the paper stays enabled.
How can I make the paper disable when changing between tools?

well, if what you call "another tool" is a custom tool, (buttonized in a custom panel), it isn't so hard :
RMB Edit your tool : LMB line0 > Insert a Command,
then, LMB again on the new (empty) line0 and choose Type Script's Command,
type :
tv_paper Active 0 in the text field, then "OK", "OK".
if "another tool" is one of the main tool panel, I can't see actually anything else than
to assign [Tool: Toggle Paper] to a shortkey,
so when you want to toggle the paper ON/OFF or OFF/ON, you just have to hit that shortkey.
of course the custom tools way is much more preferable, imo.

Zig, thanks for this tip... I have accumulated more than a few of my own custom brush buttons that need this line added, especially after using brushes from the Animation Creation Trial Pack.

I just updated my toolbar to 1.6. You will find it on the first page with a quick example. Ah and here is an other one
