Could you try to create a new profile from the Startup panel (enabled from the Startup tab of the Preferences) and run TVPaint with it to see if this changes anything regarding the selection tool's behavior?

The issue with the freehand selection tool not responding properly with line smoothing sounds like the same one that I reported back in June - https://tvpaint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15044

Sewie's signature indicates he's using a Cintiq 32 Pro, which has a native resolution of 4K. I have a 4k pen display as well and had the same issue as Sewie. BUT, as I reported in that thread, the issue was not present when I dropped the pen display resolution to 1980x1080(I later discovered that 2560x1440 works fine as well). The issue also does not occur when Real Time is left UNCHECKED even at 4k resolution. So, I concluded that my pc, powered by a meager i7 3770k, is simply not fast enough to keep up with whatever processing is needed to calculate line smoothing (specifically Average (Points)) with real time checked on a 4k pen display set to native resolution.

I marked that June topic as SOLVED even though no one from the TVP staff confirmed or followed up with me in that thread. But based on my simple resolution test, the "solution" seemed pretty obvious - build a better PC. Or, find a work around which for me is simply setting Toggle Real Time to a shortcut key. Another option is to use Lazy Nezumi for line smoothing.

Sewie, could you try lowering your resolution to see if the issue persists?
Dean or anyone else, can you confirm whether or not Line Smoothing with Real Time checked might cause issues with users on a 4k pen display but with moderately powered PCs. Sewie's i7-12900 is certainly no slouch but since TVP doesn't utilize the GPU, perhaps it's (real time line smoothing) a bit too much for the processor to reliably do on a 4k resolution pen display.

I did, and there is no difference.

Makes a slight difference. But the issue is still there.

Just wanted to note that this issue persists in version 11.7.0.

This problem is still very persistent in TVPaint. I've updated to v.11.7.1 and all the points mentioned in this thread (in my own posts) are still there. It is pretty hard to reproduce but it always crops up.
Drawing is still not as smooth as it used to be with the dongle version, but has improved somewhat from version 11.5.3 and version 11.7.0.

The issues with any selection tool, be it "fill tool", "selection tool" or "cut brush" are still there. Which means they are not very responsive. It always happens when I've been working in the same TVPaint file for a while, which leads me to believe that it is perhaps an issue with TVPaint's memory management.

It seems that your stylus is missing a number of inputs when using selection tools, could you send me the custom panel you are using via PM so I can try to reproduce the bug myself, please?

I want to mention that this issue is still present in the may 2nd (2023) hotfix update build.

Edit: Especially the lag with a cutbrush or selection tool is prevalent. Doesn't occur all the time but when it crops up it's very hard to work with.

Hello Sewie, it turns out that this issue wasn't a side effect of the "FX Preview" bug afterall, so we are still investigating it.

I did a quick test with the 11.7.2 update and it looks that this issue is gone now, except when I use these settings in the Line Smoothing panel with 'Catch Up' marked ON.


Apart from that everything seems to work as it should.

Mine has started lagging big time with the new update. Is there any way I can get the old version? I'm in the middle of a project.
