Oh sure. Here you go.
examplePSD.zip
Indeed: in TVPaint one single layer; in GIMP many.
Then I saved from GIMP and reopened from TVPaint, and now it's okay (though the file lost half of its size) :
00 Tuerspalt2 v05.psd.zip
Interesting that opening the PSD in GIMP , then re-saving it from GIMP will allow it to open in TVPaint with layers .
But what I can't figure out is why the original PSD file won't open in TVPaint with the layers intact. I've tried to reproduce the issue on my end, but I can't reproduce it . All of my PSD files saved with multiple layers will open in TVPaint with the layers intact. (which , of course, is a good thing ! That's what we want ... but it's a mystery to me why some PSD files would not open properly in TVPaint ... could it be a Photoshop (and TVPaint) running on Windows vs. Photoshop (and TVPaint) on Mac thing ? )

I don't think that's the reason. I opened the file from Xavier in Photoshop (Windows) and saved it under a new name and it still works as multilayer PSD in TVPain. Maybe a thing to notice: This file wasn't created in Photoshop, but in After Effects. Exported from there as PSD, than I deleted all folders, guidelines etc. in Photoshop and saved it again as PSD.
Also weird, that it lost a lot of it size by saving it from Gimp. Like some hidden stuff, which TVPaint can't handle, but GIMP can.

I try to import a multilayer PSD file in TVP, it imports it, but only as a single layer. I merged the groups in Photoshop and removed the guidelines, to see if this could be the problem, but I still only get the whole PSD merged into one single layer in TVP. Do I miss something?
I experienced this odd bug for the first time today. I tried to open one of my student's PSD files (with five layers) in TVPaint, but when it opened in TVPaint 11.7.1 it shows a single merged layer. This has never happened before. Always before if I open a PSD file in TVPaint it retains all the layers of the PSD file.

Hi David,
That's strange: would it be possible for you to send us your student's file via email? Would you happen to know which version of Photoshop it was created with and the export options selected by your student?

I believe I can send you the student's file. I will PM you the link.
I think she is using Photoshop 2022. I don't know the export settings. I think she is just using the regular Save As ... then saves it as a PSD, nothing out of the ordinary, but I will ask if she remembers anything specific about the settings she used.

Thank you!
Your student's file was in 16bits RGB mode. I have changed that to 8bits RGB mode and saved the file again in Photoshop: TVPaint was then able to open the file while separating all the different layers. I have PM'd you a download link for the resaved file.

Shouldn't this throw a descritpive error message in TVP? "This PSD file is in 16bit which TVP can't open. Convert to 8bit and try again."

Good idea, we'll see what we can do.

Thank you for solving the mystery for me ! Now I will know what to do if I encounter this issue again.
It seem that this information should also be added to the User Guide in the section on Importing files to TVPaint.

+1 .
(I am eagerly looking forward to the next generation of TVPaint that will not have the 8-bit limitation.)

Yes, the pop up warning message is a good idea. We will also update the User Guide to warn users about this current limitation!
