I think if you are working on Black lines, lines being on their own layer,
painting in "Screen" mode over the line (dry = off) should give you the same result as "Add", or "Color" modes,
except you haven't to lock the transparency in "Screen" mode.

It seems that if you work in screen mode you have to be sure about your colours. It makes lines lighter if you try to recolor them..

have you set "Drying" option OFF, Mikko ?
as far as you keep the same color, it should work,
if you change the color, it's still working, but only on black lines.
Re-coloring non-black lines needs to use the "Color" mode, with Alpha locked.

Thanks ZigOtto. Is alpha locked same as a stencil ON?

yes and no ...
yes if it's alone, because Stencil is working in addition with the selection areas, (when exist),
but here, the main difference is that "Stencil" locks the alpha regarding the assigned Layer (Stencil gadget checked),
where the "Preserve Transparency" works regarding the Current Layer, whatever it is,
so moving from one layer to another, the "locked alpha" always follows the content of the new current one.

Aaa..Now I see. Newer found ..or understood these A,R,G,B buttons at the toolbar before.. But when coloring lines is there any advantages of using "add" instead of "color"?

IMHO, it's "kif-kif", the only difference I can see is the shortkeys :
- F2 for "Color" mode (in default Shortcuts config),
- you have to set the shortkey yourself for "Add" mode.

Great post David! What you mean by using the add function? I tried it and it colored more than just the line or I try to say it worked just like a normal pen. I've done line coloring with stencil and just color mode in my pen. Is "add function" better when done in right way?

Sorry for not answering your question more quickly. I wasn't around very much on Saturday or Sunday, and just now getting back to internet stuff ...

I think ZigOtto addressed your questions. I may be doing it "wrong" by using the ADD function to change the color of the black lines, but that's how I figured out to do it . If there's a better way it may be in the manual or people here may know a better way . For any finished animated pieces I would make sure to work out the color models (including colored lines) ahead of time , so no question of what should be done when filling in the colors . No room for error at that point, it should all be locked down , palettes, colored lines, EFX levels, etc. This is why I would be a big advocate in favor of preserving each step along the way (roughs, clean ups, inked levels in black & white) saved on separate layers, in case any mistakes are made or changes need to be made. Work out experiments with colors and colored lines or FX on copies of the original layers. After that I believe that all "ink & paint" work ought to be purely mechanical , no more room for making changes or errors. Colors , color keying , ought to be worked out for each shot before all the individual animation frames are colored.

Well it's strange for me. I like drawing and doing effects in tvpaint, but I honestly prefer inking in toonboom studio. Im used to inking on paper but after using flash, toonboom, tvpaint, and other software, to me toonboom feels the best for inking because if gives a nice stroke that u can resize, reshape, or smooth. It's also strang to me because each software has thigns I like about it. Tvpaint has the best drawing/sketching ability, flash has the best timeline, toonboom has the best inking system, and aftereffects/tvpaint have the best effects.

So globally we are still on a good position :p
And we even can have a better one in a couple of weeks
