Yesterday I watched Pear Cider and Cigarettes from Robert Valley, which he animated using Photoshop. I also bought his Animation Photoshop Tutorials in which he explains how he uses Photoshop to animate. Basically he uses smart objects and distort them using keyframes. For a lot of stuff this method could be pretty handy.
I know stuff like smart objects won't be possible with the current architecture of TVPaint, but I thought I should mention this now, so it could be considered for the next architecture.

Thanks for sharing, we will glance at it !
But don't worry, we already plan something similar in the next core.

Re: Smart Objects
Hello hello — curious about this as well. Is this something that's still being explored / possibly on its way to a future release of TVPaint? I've been using a similar workflow in Clip Studio Paint but still prefer to animate in TVPaint for a few reasons.
