keyboard shortcuts mac/windows

Post by Joost »

We are working in a small animation studio with people who are using both mac and windows computers. It would be nice to have the opportunity to share the keyboard shortcuts from mac to windows and the other way around, so we have the possibility to work on the computers of the other persons of the studio. Or to just have the exact same keyboard shortcuts on every system.

The problem is, that the ctrl button in windows = the cmd button on mac. But tvpaint ignores this. Every standard ctrl keyboard shortcut on mac should be a cmd keyboard shortcut.
Would it be possible for tvpaint to change this in the next version? I understand that it would be annoying for a lot of mac users because they have to change almost every keyboard shortcut they created, but in the end it will help us all because you would be able to exchange your keyboard shortcuts to every system.

thanks!

Why don't you simply use only shortcuts with "Control" (and not with "CMD") ? This key can be found on both OS' keyboards.

Hi Elodie,

Because this is not how mac works. You should accept that windows cmd = ctrl on mac. Take a look at every program on mac and you'll see that ctrl is always cmd on mac. Photoshop windows undo: ctrl z = photoshop mac undo cmd z.
If tvpaint would change this, every problem would be solved!
I think every mac user would agree.

Oh ok, sorry, I forgot this is harder to change habits than spending weeks of development just to allow a magic switch where Ctrl becomes Cmd and vice versa.

Yep, that's also the same in TVPaint. And also other basic shortcuts like Save / copy / paste....

+1

Using Control instead of command on mac is not an option. The suggestion alone shows there's little care about usability for mac customers... :(

Also, since we use more than just TVPaint, changing habits is impossible, as ALL other software would still require using Command.

I understand that it's a lot of work to fix this. But it would help of the mac users for the REST OF OUR LIVES!
All mac users use cmd for a lot of their shortcuts. If we export our shortcuts to a windows user, we have to fix every cmd keyboard shortcut. I use different software on my computer and tvpaint is the only one that uses ctrl in stead of cmd.

Well, Apple shows no care at all about developers who have to spend weeks to fix stupid small bugs, where Linux and Windows are piece of cake, mainly because they do not care to help or to bring any document when they update their OS.

Concerning your shortcuts, there is also an easy solution :

• Save your key map
• Import the cfg file in Libre Office
• copy Ctrl shortcuts and overwrite Cmd shortcut
• use ctrl + F (or cmd + f) and replace Ctrl by Cmd, starting where you there should have cmd shortcuts
• save keeping cfg format
• load key map in TVPaint
• enjoy

time needed : less than 1 minute :)

You say you are a small studio. My suggestion would be for you to unify your computers to either all Macs or all PCs and problem solved for all around. For the rest of the world and for the rest of eternity.

If I export my keyboard shortcuts on my mac machine (I'll attach the file to this post), and import them on a windows machine (I work on a windows laptop when I need to work outside of the studio), my CMD+S save shortcut disappears. Of course I can create a new CTRL+S save shortcut on the windows machine, but when I export the shortcuts again and import them on my mac machine, even CMD+S is no longer there. Only Ctrl+S (which is counter intuitive on a mac!!!).

There's clearly a design flaw here, but as usual there's the standard protective reaction on the forum because TVPaint is perfect.

Paul, we have 10 different machines here (PC, mac and linux), replacing them all at once is expensive and completely unnecessary.

Paul,

If you don't use a mac computer, you won't understand our problem. Do please stay out of this discussion.

Sorry if I sound rude,

But i've got the feeling that nobody tries to understand the problems I came across using tvpaint.
This is a basic tvpaint problem and I think you must solve this!

Sure they add up.
A lot of Mac power-users use shortcuts of the form Ctrl+Cmd+[someKey].
What do these shortcut becomes ?

It is not because *you* only use Cmd+[someKey] shortcuts we should impose this limitation to *every* other user.
