Drawing body structure for animation: i Need Help!

Post by ebphoto »

Hi everyone!
I did a short about robot Grendizer using TVPaint Standard ediction, it's really cool software: i'm in love with it! :D
So, what's the problem? The problem is made by me 'n it is about drawing. I'm not good on drawing because i don't have good knowledg on how to create human body structure.
So the result is that the human figure loses his body proportions while i'm doing all drawings for a scene. :oops:
I also need lessons or ebook about on how to create all details on the body in all drawings keeping in mind on how is TVPaint beacause i don't want to make drawings two times per single drawing. :wink:

Someone can help me??

Thank you in advance! :)

http://amzn.com/0240810961" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and start from there. I wish I had this book when I was starting. Other reference is http://amzn.com/0399508031" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or this http://amzn.com/0395530075" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and probably this http://amzn.com/0823015777" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but if you stick with first suggestion, you are on a good way, but be warned, it takes time and every day practice. Good luck!

The Mechanical Pencil is for drawing vehicles and inamate objects only. Don't even dare to try to draw something else with it.

Those are all good suggestions (especially the Walt Stanchfield books, Drawn To Life , Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 . Although, I will say I'm not a big fan of Burne Hogarth's approach to anatomy . I'd prefer the George Bridgeman books on anatomy and figure drawing (reprinted by Dover Publications) or Andrew Loomis's books on figure drawing.

I'd add to the suggestions : Figure Drawing for All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis , which is back in print , but is also available as a PDF download along with other Andrew Loomis instructional books , here: Andrew Loomis Books . Also Drawing People: How to Portray the Clothed Figure by Barbara Bradley. For a comic book approach to drawing the figure there is the classic How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way by John Buscema. Buscema gives examples of pushing poses that apply directly to animation:

Hi Slowtiger, long time no see you, how are you buddy?
You say me that mechanical pencil is for drawing vehicles and inanimate objects only, ... why there is this kind of difference between those tools? (Pencil e mechanical pencil)
You can explain more specific please?

My second nightmare is to going mad 'n spend too much time after the raw drawing for to get better drawing on the raw drawing. And if i think to put details also... oh my God.... 3 steps about it are enough for me :shock:

Animated films are like forests, some are even jungles and you can't have a forest with just a few trees. Once you get the hang of inbetweening you start enjoying the drawing process.

Learning to draw is mostly made up of lots of practice time, like learning to master a musical instrument. To draw lots of inbetweens means hours and hours of practice. I understand that you are concerned about even drawing key poses, as you should be. My recommendation would be to keenly observe people as they move around; on television, from a sidewalk cafe or just looking out a window and draw what you see and feel. Books are fine to browse through but never should be used to copy from. The most important thing is to become a sharp observer of people's body language. Then you should draw what you see inside yourself: observe and then use your imagination to draw several key poses of what you have observed, after which you should work on inbetweens which will give your wrist practice. It is important to teach yourself how to draw with simple lines, which inbetweening will teach you to do.

Take a good, long look at this man. He was self-taught and he is a good example of what I mean when I say you should be an observer of life around you and then draw what and where your imagination leads you to:

Well, your words are very similar to Mr Buscema, however i think u r right! :)
I must spend more time to see ur links however when the time is not so much the "cliches" on movements and some trick they can be really helpful! :wink:
However my 2° nightmare is how to be in a right way between drawing sketch e drawing good on the sketch without spend tons of time :roll:

Never push on the pen; draw with a light hand in long strokes. Even if a stroke will seem to have gone astray, pay little attention to that and continue until the figure is complete. Notice where you made mistakes but don't correct any of these -- just delete the drawing and draw a new one the same way; the same pose.

Keep working that way, using those long, slow lines. People who try to draw fast are performance drawers and disconnected from what they see inside their minds because they are second guessing the minds of the people who they imagine are watching.

The idea is to get the drawing not to look so much like the person or object you are drawing but how the person and the object make you feel. At one point, one day, the pose that came out of your hand will connect with how you feel and it'll make a click in your head because you'll know in an instant that you got it right. The click is the sound of receiving a gift.
