There is also an asian idioù (Japanese ? Chinese ? I don't remember...) : "100 testimonials are not worth a look".

(this is fun how idioms are similar from a language to another ^^)

The "What's New in TVP 10.0" page says:
Passe-partout helps you to visualize your camera's point of view
So, if not "Camera View" , how about "Camera POV" ?

(however, the v. 10.0 user manual says: "TVPaint Animation Professional Edition includes a features named “Passepartout”. This feature helps you to imagine better the final output, with the camera view

I don't understand how there can be other suggestions after Viewfinder, which happens to be the technically accurate name for this feature's function, it is a single word, and the word is widely used throughout the world in both photography and cinematography.

Viewfinder works for me.

Just following-up on this: does the Dev Team agree with the idea of changing the name Passepartout to Viewfinder ?

This is not a huge issue for me , but I think it would make the function more obvious to non-French speaking new users of TVPaint who might stumble over the term "passepartout" .

In Denmark it means the frame(usually white) around a picture, we got it from france, But it would only be people who is interested in painting or photography who knows it
I got it from the 3d Software "Blender". Where the passepartout function is called passepartout. So it is not a word that is never heard of .
I gueass viewfinder is fine.. I wouldn't understand the function of viewfinder from the word until i enable and disable it though. If I should understand the meaning from the word it should be called "Camera Mask" or Just "Mask" in the Display Panel. it is already situated Under "Camera" in the camera section. What I would like to see is the camera mask is only visibe on the canvas not in the whole zoom window. An enable/disable checkbox to the Passepartout/Viewfinder/Camera Mask. Just like the "Camera" in the Display panel so I both could adjust the opacity but still enable/disable it with one keystroke.(And still se the camera(blue line)).

i agree with mads
view finder suggests a more active tool, as in "something that will help you find the view"
but the passepartout is only shading out whats outside the already found cameraview

passe-partout means frame around an image (also in dutch thats why i never objected :) )and thus perfectly describes what it is.

Camera Frame or Camera Mask would therefore be better alternatives english speakers

and indeed again what Mads says
There are biggerr issues with the tool then the name
for me its that you cannot set it from the tool panel but have to find the display settings to adjust it
And its weird behavior of staying ON after you stop using the Camera

I was thinking the word "Viewfinder" in my book more is the actually blue camera square and what's inside actually the opposite of the Passe-Partout.Passe-Partout it is the black mask around the viewfinder.
when asking wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passe-Partout_(framing)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viewfinder

I think "Passe-Partout" is more accurate.

What about "View-finder Framing"

Interesting how there doesn't seem to be a suitable English word to express such a simple function. The French Pasepartout seems to be the only proper expression; it is also used in Czech so I have no problem with this word either. It's the spelling that is problematic. In my opinion there is a real need to come up with easier to spell (thus easier to remember) words for both Faux-Fixe and Pasepartout. Local Loop and View Finder Frame to me seem to describe the two functionalities quite accurately.

I read through some of the post and You explain Paul the viewfinder also include what is outside the camera view.
So in that sense the viewfinder is the whole project image. This area is called "the canvas"in Photoshop.

We have 3 areas
1)all of it. in photoshop it is called "the canvas" what is it called in TVP?(that would be the viewfinder in a camera if we should use the camera metaphor for understanding)
2)we have what the camera sees. What is this area called in TVP?
3)and then we have the area outside the camera, What is this area called in TVP?.

2+3 =1

And then there's is the function of tinting area 3(the area outside area 2 which is what the camera sees) in a color of your choice. this function is now called "passepartout".
But Passepartout is NOT the actual area. So maybe we should start by naming these 3 areas. Before we invent a name for a function modifying one of the areas?

I agree with your approach; establishing proper names for all these areas is crucial because anyone who has taught TVP will know how vital proper labels are to explaining anything. As far as I know, the canvas is called the Project Window, which Is inaccurate and I usually resort to calling it the "Drawing Area", which is clumsy. Project Window is inaccurate because that encompasses all the little buttons and sliders along the frame of the window -- so what's the inside of the frame called?. Nothing in particular.

Personally I dislike canvas and stage. A sheet of paper is what 2D animators draw on. Can it be called the Paper? It seems to me that "Paper" would be most practical because there would be no confusion surrounding it. We have the pencil, the eraser, the brush -- so what can be wrong with paper?

If we come up with all these names -- how interested is the development team? Will you guys adopt it?

The development team has no objection, but you should ask "those in charge of the documentation" :)

If you choose Paper for the drawing area, you also have to change the Paper in the tools to something else...

Oops -- good point. That would obviously be impractical. My suggestion would then be "Cel". :|
