I think viewfinder is a better term, too... since we already have the option for 'camera' view.

In French, a "Cache" is an object to protect your lens =)

Paul Fierlinger wrote:Very truthfully. I thought hard about speaking up but was constantly questioning myself about the propriety of making such a request of a French company and especially since I am aware of your country's sensitivities on such issues -- so I kept my mouth shut until others came up with the issue.

Yes, that is the same thing that stopped me from mentioning it. I did not want to be the "ugly American" obnoxiously barging in and insisting on having the language changed . Personally, I find the name Passepartout quaint and charming, but I now have had several inquiries from students and co-workers about : "what is it ? what does that mean? " . The word Passepartout is not common among English-speakers , so now I bring it up. Sorry, I should have said something before. When I explain what it is they get it, but it seems to me that we should remove obstacles and misunderstandings for the new user if possible, so I think "Camera View" says it more clearly for the English version of TVPaint.

Neither among the french-speakers… except for the "french speakers photographs"…
(who are still working the old way)

… I only use it as : "a tool/key that allows you to open every doors"…

(it remembers me an actor of "fort-Boyard", too… ( a TV program)… well, forget it)

(in french, "recadrage" ce serait bien ?)

I count here many +1 and nobody proposed a different name...

Call it "Camera view" is not a good idea, IMO, because you can "erase" the passe-partout, but keep the camera view active. By the way, this term is already used several time in the software (export panel, publish panel, button to activate in the remote...). So, it's problematic. For example, when choosing the "camera view" in publish > pdf : will I obtain a storyboard with the point of view of the camera or will I obtain a camera with a grey background ?

The camera view and the passe partout are linked, but are not exactly the same, so they shouldn't be named alike, IMO =)
Well, my proposed name in the first post was "Camera View" and I think that communicates the function clearly, but if that is problematic for the reasons mentioned by Elodie , then I would second Svengali's suggestion of "Director's Viewfinder" , if the user manual explaining the function is accompanied by an illustration showing the traditional Director's Viewfinder , and also the internationally understood "hands framing a shot" illustration:
truffaut_frames_a_shot.jpg
truffaut_frames_a_shot.jpg (73.01 KiB) Viewed 25295 times
Polanski_frames_a_shot_Viewfinder.jpg
Camera_View_PassePartout_Framing_Hands.jpg
Camera_View_PassePartout_Framing_Hands.jpg (57.57 KiB) Viewed 25295 times
( as we say in the English idiom: "A picture is worth a thousand words" ... is it "Un petit dessin vaut mieux qu'un long discours." ?

*NB: Photos attached are for example only, not necessarily the actual photos I would suggest using for the user manual illustration.

This is becoming too funny   It can all be blamed on Political Correctness; a bugaboo prevailing from the 80's U.S. ultra liberal cultural revolution and now look what it keeps doing to us. :x
