Custom color selection tool

Post by Soom »

Very often I find myself in a need to select or erase a specific color, but there is no such function in TVP. There is a tool in Photoshop called "select color". It would be great to have in TVP, as it would speed up painting very much.
To give an example, I have attached a picture: let's say I want to select all the blue color and paint over it or delete it. There is no way to do it except with Magic Wand, and it will take forever to select all those small patches of color. With Color selection tool, it would be possible to do in one click.

ColorKeyer FX to erase,
Color Replacer FX to replace one color by an other one.

ps : don't you keep the lines and the colors on different layers ?

I do, but after painting on the color layer I want to work on one specific color. I understand the FX, but I think selection is more flexible - for example I can paint inside one color, or apply textures, etc.

Color Replacer FX is yet another of TVPaint's powerful, yet somewhat "hidden" features for digital ink & paint (like the Auto-Pick Color option)

It is not immediately obvious from the User Manual how the Color Replacer FX applies to cartoon figures.

I'd think this should be replaced by illustration using an animation figure (the "Running Kid" perhaps) so it is easy for new users to see at a glance how it applies to coloring animation layers.

Hey guys, Soom knows the Color replacer. He opened that topic following the discussion we had here : viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5356" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

hmmm ... probably for an illustrator, but for an Animator, imo the colorKeyer is far more efficient,
so you can perform a color modification or add a texture in it all along the animation in 2 clics,
Selection tools work fine for one drawing, not for a whole animated sequence,
when it goes to modify a color part in a already colored animation, my way is to duplicate the color layer,
colorkey the upper one (to make a hole), and applying a color_FX (+ eventually a texture) in the layer below.
You can also make a second (variant) version in a duplicated clip and play the 2 clips to see what version
looks better for you, then hide the other one,
it works like a charm, and you can modify it again later, as long as you keep the color layers group un-merged .

Ok, the thing with the 2 layers and masking one with the other, is a kinda solution - probably it would work the same, it's just not as intuitive - more technical. For me, being more an artist, than a technical guy, it's much more intuitive to work directly on one color layer... Frankly, I didn't get too much into the FX yet, I should probably start getting used to them. Anyway - I still think, for somebody that wants to have more control on each image (for example when painting a BG or a prop), such a tool would be a big help...

I have remembered one important reason why I need the color selection tool sometimes. So I can select and transform it!
For example - I have a character with arms drawn in black and body in blue. Now I realize I need to shift the arms a little bit in 10 frames, because I changed the position of the body. So I need to draw around them with selection tool, while making sure I don't grab parts of the body, and then move around with the transform tool. But if I could only select one black color, that would select the arms automatically and I would save myself from using the selection tool every time...
