List of requests

Post by Joost »

I have some requests for tvpaint:

-If you select several layers and move them above or beneath other layers, your layers are automatically deselected. It is really hard to find your selected layers back (especially when the layers have the same layer color). So my request is: keep the layers selected until you deselect them yourself.

-I would like to have the possibility to zoom in further into the timeline. Now I can't really see what I drew in each frames.

-When I move trough the timeline using the alt button (very handy), the scroll bar (with the 'Z' button on top of it) wont go to the bottom of the screen. There are always two millimeters left. then I have to use this scroll bar to go to the bottom of the screen. why is this?

-I would like to be able to see my brush size when I'm using my brush. Most of the times I use the cross cursor, but sometimes it would be handy to see how big your brush is, when you are painting.

-The transform tool has a panning x and panning y function, but you have to apply your action every time you use it (why?). So I use the panning tool instead, but there is no panning x and panning y function for this tool, so it is impossible to move a drawing with this tool to the exact right spot.

-It would also be nice to move the anchor point of an object so you won't have to rotate your object from the center.

-If you reset the transform tool, it automatically switches the AAliasing to medium. I can't imagine that this is useful for anybody. So when you reset your transform tool, the AAliasing should stay the way it was.

-If you merge layers, it would be handy if you keep the color and name of the layer on top (like photoshop)

-It would be nice to have the opportunity to select frames from different layers. Maybe select multiple frames the way you can select multiple folders on the desktop of your computer.

-Why does tvpaint automatically open a project that is called "untitled 1" Why can't tvpaint start with an empty window?

-Layer groups in folders, not the color method tvpaint is using now. I won't make use of groups in tvpaint how it is organized now. And the use of groups was one of the reasons for my tvpaint 10 purchase...

-If possible categorize tools, so P for pen activates the last pen you used with all it's settings instead of the only pen tool you can assign to the shortcut. (also like Photoshop, when you press B in photoshop, it remembered the last settings of the brush you used)

-Freehand custom brush: When you copy or cut an image and you want to stamp it somewhere else, and then want to rotate or scale it, the brush immediately moves to another place, so you lost the place where you wanted to stamp it. It would be nice if you could keep the brush on the place you wanted to have it while scaling or rotating your brush.

-With the transform tool you can only scale both axes at the same time. It is called the transform tool, so why not scale the x axe separate from the y axe?

-When opening a new document remember the size of a previous opened project window.

- delete layer > confirm. Why? Just delete layer would be enough because you can undo it.

I hope that I see al these requests back in the next update of tvpaint!! :)

Note: a long list like this is very hard to answer to. Please note that several of your requests have been asked before. Also please refer to the TVP version you're using.
-If you select several layers and move them above or beneath other layers, your layers are automatically deselected. It is really hard to find your selected layers back (especially when the layers have the same layer color). So my request is: keep the layers selected until you deselect them yourself.
Agreed.
-I would like to have the possibility to zoom in further into the timeline. Now I can't really see what I drew in each frames.
I don't see much sense in that because you can easily click there and see the frame full screen. The new marker features (v10) also should help.
-I would like to be able to see my brush size when I'm using my brush. Most of the times I use the cross cursor, but sometimes it would be handy to see how big your brush is, when you are painting.
See http://www.tvpaint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5331
-The transform tool has a panning x and panning y function, but you have to apply your action every time you use it (why?). So I use the panning tool instead, but there is no panning x and panning y function for this tool, so it is impossible to move a drawing with this tool to the exact right spot.
Don't see the problem here, I can easily place stuff exactly on the pixel with the pan tool as well. The transform tool can be applied to any number of frames with only one return.
-It would also be nice to move the anchor point of an object so you won't have to rotate your object from the center.
It's already possible with the keyframer, but would be nice in the tranform tool, too.
-If you reset the transform tool, it automatically switches the AAliasing to medium. I can't imagine that this is useful for anybody. So when you reset your transform tool, the AAliasing should stay the way it was.
Confirmed bug, see elsewhere.
-If you merge layers, it would be handy if you keep the color and name of the layer on top (like photoshop)
Not exactly. Sometimes I like to keep one original name, sometimes not. A good solution would be to have the old name in the new merged layer highlighted for instant editing.
-It would be nice to have the opportunity to select frames from different layers. Maybe select multiple frames the way you can select multiple folders on the desktop of your computer.
Agreed. Also should work on layers: select layers 1, 3, 5 without 2, 4.
-Why does tvpaint automatically open a project that is called "untitled 1" Why can't tvpaint start with an empty window?
Most times I like it this way, I can start to draw right away. What bothers me is that this "untitled" stays when I open an existing project. TVP should sense tat this is an unused empty project and close it when another named project is opened.
-Layer groups in folders, not the color method tvpaint is using now. I won't make use of groups in tvpaint how it is organized now. And the use of groups was one of the reasons for my tvpaint 10 purchase...
Discussed elsewhere in detail.
-If possible categorize tools, so P for pen activates the last pen you used with all it's settings instead of the only pen tool you can assign to the shortcut. (also like Photoshop, when you press B in photoshop, it remembered the last settings of the brush you used)
Maybe. But maybe I'd prefer to have a small bar with about 10 icons for my custom tools, each rememberng its last colour and paper setting.
Problem: you only have 1 cursor, so how tell TVP that it shouldn't move the brush and when move it again? I think this is technically impossible.
-With the transform tool you can only scale both axes at the same time. It is called the transform tool, so why not scale the x axe separate from the y axe?
Agreed.
-When opening a new document remember the size of a previous opened project window.
I prefer to have all new projects the same size as in the startup dialogue.
- delete layer > confirm. Why? Just delete layer would be enough because you can undo it.
Obviously you never have merged or accidentially deleted 20+ layers in a 10 GB document. Undo is nearly impossible then, and a crash might occur. I like to keep the "confirm".

-I would like to have the possibility to zoom in further into the timeline. Now I can't really see what I drew in each frames.
BTW. You can zoom and pan through the timeline holding the Alt button and the right mouse button. Just a tip.
-With the transform tool you can only scale both axes at the same time. It is called the transform tool, so why not scale the x axe separate from the y axe?
Wasn't there a custom panel that had a buttton that could do that? I can't seem to find it in the 'contents sharing thread'.

yeap, but it is working on Custom Brushes if I'm right, one "Rescale" button with keeping ratio, the other with "unlinking" X and Y.
btw, you can use this as workaround, cut the element as C.B., edit it (rescale, rotate), then paste manually, but I agree it's a bit tedious.
so, I add my vote to a separate X Y rescale in the tranform tool,
(LMB-clic &drag one corner to free-rescale, and Ctrl+ LMB-clic &drag to contrained-rescale,
or LMB-clic &drag to rescale with ratio, and Shift+ LMB-clic &drag for free-rescaling).

I agree too =)

You're right : it's not normal
-I would like to be able to see my brush size when I'm using my brush. Most of the times I use the cross cursor, but sometimes it would be handy to see how big your brush is, when you are painting.
We also have the contrary, with users tired to see a big brush, while they obtain a small line when they draw : this is annoying too.
If you are using a connection mode, like the pressure, with a brush of 100 pixels : how should be the display ? 100 pixels ? 75 ? 50 ? 5 ?
No solutions here. So, if you want to see your brush, while using a connection, modify the Profile Editor and set it like this, for example :
brush size 01.png
brush size 01.png (27.31 KiB) Viewed 33198 times
v
v
v
brush size 02.png
brush size 02.png (28.49 KiB) Viewed 33198 times
-The transform tool has a panning x and panning y function, but you have to apply your action every time you use it (why?).
Panning tool = move pixel per pixel : no alteration
Transform tool = has to anti aliased your modification = pixel alteration= need to be confirmed.
-It would also be nice to move the anchor point of an object so you won't have to rotate your object from the center.
Frequently asked and I definitively agree =)
-If you reset the transform tool, it automatically switches the AAliasing to medium. I can't imagine that this is useful for anybody. So when you reset your transform tool, the AAliasing should stay the way it was.
Frequently askedand should be corrected soon =)
-If you merge layers, it would be handy if you keep the color and name of the layer on top (like photoshop)
I agree too.
-It would be nice to have the opportunity to select frames from different layers. Maybe select multiple frames the way you can select multiple folders on the desktop of your computer.
It would be nice... but not possible, at the moment !
-Why does tvpaint automatically open a project that is called "untitled 1"
Because !
It's more friendly to automatically have a drawing space, in particular for people who are not used in TVPaint.
-Layer groups in folders, not the color method tvpaint is using now. I won't make use of groups in tvpaint how it is organized now. And the use of groups was one of the reasons for my tvpaint 10 purchase...
Making real folders is in our heads for years, but still not possible... =/
But well, who knows what the future will bring ?
-If possible categorize tools, so P for pen activates the last pen you used with all it's settings instead of the only pen tool you can assign to the shortcut. (also like Photoshop, when you press B in photoshop, it remembered the last settings of the brush you used)
Not convinced... Or Maybe a shortuct to navigate in the Brush history ? (next / previous used brush ?)
You can also use selections + transform tool in that case.
I agree it could be handy, but Custom brush cannot recognize its place, as it depends on your cursor's place !
-With the transform tool you can only scale both axes at the same time. It is called the transform tool, so why not scale the x axe separate from the y axe?
I agree : I hadt he same issue recently (and using the Warp tool is not really handy in that case), so I definitively agree
-When opening a new document remember the size of a previous opened project window.
Hmm, yes, we could add a "keep project size" option in the Preference panel (where you could choose or define the "basic" new project, each time you create a new project).

Thank you for all your suggestions and request ! :D

Take a look at photoshop.
They show the brush outline (!) even when you use pressure. About the size: when you use brush size 100, show brush size 100, if you use brush size 5, show brush size 5.
That's how it should work in my opinion...

FWIW, Gimp and MyPaint do this also, although MyPaint just shows a circle outline based on chosen brush size.

Yes, I know you were thinking about Photoshop. Personally, that brush outline always annoyed me, in particular when I was using a very hard sensitive level with the pressure and obtain very thin lines, while Photoshop shown me a huge stain, about 15 times bigger than the result I obtained.
At the moment, if you configure your brush like this, you will obtain the wished result :
brush size 03.png
brush size 03.png (56.02 KiB) Viewed 33183 times
(think to change your interface's preferences and use the "point" cursor, instead of the "cross")

But well, maybe we could add an option to en/dis-able.

Hmm... What if you did something on that untitled project ? Will it ask you to save or will it close without asking ? What if you opened a project, then create a new untitled project and then, open a second project = should the untitled project disappear ?
I'm not sure being so intrusive is really a good idea. After all, it's just an untitled project, you just have to click on a cross to close it...

But what if you didn't do anything in Untitled 1? It should close and dissapear unless you've drawn something in it.

But in my opinion it would be better if TVPaint would not open a project at all. Let the user decide if they want to start a new project, why does TVPaint decide I want to use project with the same canvas size as a previous project?

It should be possible to have 0 projects open.

I don't see much sense in that because you can easily click there and see the frame full screen. The new marker features (v10) also should help.
About zooming further into the timeline:

If you have 30 layers, and there is one layer you want to hide (because there is something in this layer you don't want to export), it would be easy if you can see immediately which layer it is. And now it is impossible to see what's inside every frame.
So I have to check every layer to find the layer I want to hide. If I could zoom further into the timeline, I could see the image I want to hide without checking every layer.

Software can only go so far in assisting the animator. At some point it's up to you to keep your work organised. It just needs a bit of self discipline (or a strict production manager) to name layers and arrange them in a logical way, or put them in colour groups.
