I have used the
Epson Expression 10000 XL (with add-on auto-document feeder) and it works well. But of course on Mac OS we still can't scan directly to TVPaint because of the Twain driver issues ... hopefully to be fixed soon ! Until then I find that it is a simple matter to scan all the drawings in a sequence to a folder (using a logical naming sequence for the scans such as
B_0001.png , B_0002.png ,B_0003.png ,B_0004.png , etc. ) and then import the drawings to TVPaint and then use the Peg Hole Registration .
The Epson Expression 10000XL will run about $3,800 (U.S.D.) with the
auto-document feeder add on.
I have also had the
Fujitsu 6770 scanner highly recommended to me . (they use this scanner at Disney for production work) The Fujitsu 6770 is about $6,100 . It is built for high volume scanning in production.
Unfortunately the Fujitsu 6770 only has Windows drivers, no Mac drivers. Therefore I have never tested the Fujitsu 6770 scanner directly with TVPaint since I am on a Mac.
(* but I would foresee no problems in scanning with the Fujitsu , saving the scans in a folder , then importing all the scans in that folder to TVPaint. What I meant was I have no way to test the Fujitsu directly with TVPaint using the ICA --- Acquire command from the File Menu.)
The lowest cost auto-document feed scanner that can scan 12 field size animation paper is the
Brother MFC- J6910dw scanner . It costs a relatively low price of
$349.99 . (but I've seen it for sale on Amazon.com and other sites for $249.00 or less) . There is also the
Brother MFC J6510 dw scanner , retailing for $249.99 (but seen on Amazon.com for as low as $149.99) I have a similar model, the now discontinued Brother MFC 6490 CW scanner and it works well for scanning 12 Field animation drawings , but I would not necessarily expect it to hold up to the rigors of high production volume . But for anyone on a low-budget such as a student or someone who doesn't need to scan a lot of drawings (I'm talking about
tens of thousands of drawings when I say
"a lot" ) the Brother J6910dw or MFC- 6490 cw should work fine. It will be interesting to me to see how long this inexpensive Brother MFC 6490 CW scanner holds up . So far, so good ...
And for the price of between $249 - $349 you could burn through about 16 or more of those Brother MFC- J6910 scanners for the cost of only 1 Fujitsu 6770 scanner OR 11 (or more) Brother scanners compared to the cost of 1 Epson Expression 10000 XL scanner. (sorry not very "green" of me to suggest this , I know ...
