Turn "none" into "constant"

Post by Elodie »

Hello everybody,

I open this topic to have your opinion about something : should we rename the connection mode "None" (= C) into "Constant" ?
Why this question ? Because "none" is not really correct and using "constant" would be more logical, as the connection mode is a little "c".

But, on the other side, we don't want to disturb your habits without having your opinion =)

So, could you vote and explain your choice ?

I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to, Elodie...
Where (what panel) can I find this "connection mode"?

I just had a look through the panels in TVP. I think you mean pull-down settings in the "Tool Panel" ?

I vote reluctantly YES but it should be listed in the same column as Pressure and all the others. "None" was very confusing to me in the beginning, especially since it was listed separately from the other options. When I explain this to my students, they are always confused by the letter C, particularly because it also stands for "Create" in the KeyFramer. Acutually, I would prefer to stay with "None" but use the letter "N", but since you say this is incorrect, I will go with C for "Constant" (or for "Confusing"? :| ).

So, maybe could we let the "None", but withdraw any letter, to symbolize the "nothing" (because N, as C, doesn't really have a sense in French) ?

Something has to communicate that there are selections behind that little button. Having nothing in the box would really make it a secret place. There should at least be a "check" symbol so that as soon as anyone would click on it, the options menu would appear.

Yes and no, because contrary to check boxes, the connections button show the profile curves and has a little relief... so...

But well, you're right, it's not a solution neither...

I actually believe that that this issue of semantics and letters is not as significant as the fact that all of these possibilities and variables of configurations is too hidden from the user. For instance it took me several years before I discovered that I can substantially alter the behavior of my pen with the curve editor because all these wonders are hidden under the label "Size".

When something says "Size" and this is where I change my pen's size with the slider arrows, why should I expect to see something firther behind a little box and investigate. To find a better word than just Size is where I see the devil of the issue. Perhaps this panel needs an additional entry.

Interesting, thank you for your smart ideas =)

Well, maybe there is something to do to improve the tool panel later... ;)

I voted for C for 'Constant'. Makes more sense to me than N for 'None' in this case.
But I agree that the pulldown under this button can be a bit mysterious. (see this thread)

A little offtopic:
I really believe that TVPaint's next prominent feature improvement should be a good, versatile and intuitive camera tool. It's the only really important animation and storytelling tool that's not quite there yet, I think. I will open a thread about that when I see what has changed in v10.

Why this question ? Because "none" is not really correct and using "constant" would be more logical, as the connection mode is a little "c".
well, the real problem here is the actual inconsistency, if you call it "None", the button should be marked [N],
if you call it "Constant", the button should return a [C] .
"None" is ok for me, because I read this feature as "how the Connexion is evotuting ?",
so None is meaning "None evolution" or "No evolutionary",
at contrary of the others, [F] for evoluting with Fade, or [S] for evoluting with Speed .

beside to fix this inconsistency, my suggestion is to add a difference in the button display, according with this user setting,
if it's on "None", it could be greyish, for all the other settings (Fade, Random, Azimute, Speed, etc...), it could be enlighted.
