Canon : TV Paint Application Crash
Whenever I press grab input using my ZR960 to capture frames, TV paint crashes.
I tried looking for updates, fixing errors or missing files, but none of them work.
I'm using DYNEX for my firewire port, and a HP pavilion core 2 duo/vista.
Does anyone know how to fix something like this? Thanks.
Btw I'm using TV paint 9.5..

So with the Canon ZR-960 mini dv camera can you get that camera to grab frames in any other kind of frame-grabbing application without crashing or is it only TVP that crashes ? (for comparison you could try downloading a free trial version of something like Toki LIne Test for Windows or Digicel Flipbook for Windows or MonkeyJam . The trial versions will operate with watermarks , but are sufficient for testing . See if you can grab frames from the Canon ZR-960 with Toki or Digicel or MonkeyJam. If you can then it would seem to point to a problem with TVP , but if the same crash occurs using other frame-grabber software the perhaps the problem is with the firewire card (DYNEX -- which particular DYNEX firewire card or adapter is it ?)
Which specific version of TVP 9.5 are you using ? The latest available version is TVP 9.5.18 . (check yours under TVP Help Menu --- "About TVP" ; if it is not 9.5.18 then update it. Click on "Check for Updates" under the Help Menu )
Does your computer generate a Crash Report when this happens ? If you can save the Crash Report data as a text file and send it to TVP Support that would help them to isolate the cause of the crash.
Re: Canon : TV Paint Application Crash
You can also test your camera via Skype or Windows live Messenger : if it doesnt work, it means TVP Animation cannot use your camera too.

Yes, it only crashes on TV paint when I try to grab frames. I tried the trial versions above and they work normally. I am using DYNEX Firewire 800 Express Card adapter and 9.5.18 version for TV paint.D.T. @Elodie thanks for the info.
I'll send a crash report to TVP support then.
btw this what appears when I click the grab input.
TV Paint has stopped working.

Re: TV Paint Application Crash
I am wondering if this issue of TVP crashing while using Video Input was ever resolved satisfactorily ? The last time I tested TVP with a Canon ZR 960 mini-dv (firewire) the video capture worked fine , but that was several versions back. Is there perhaps a bug in version 9.5.18 which is causing crashes to occur when using Video Input with firewire camera connection ?
There is also this thread reporting a similar issue , which didn't have any definitive answer given about how to fix the user's problem:
Video In Capture
and again the same user asking for help here, but no answer:
Video in Capture problem
This is of great interest to me because at the school where I teach we use TVP for stop-motion video frame capture (recommended camera is Canon ZR 960) and also for video pencil testing in traditional animation classes.
I think the tests that the user DarkraiShadowforce did using other frame-capture applications clearly demonstrates that the problem is not with the Canon ZR 960 , but rather the problem is with TVP . (the other user , "riche" , referenced above, had the same problem with a JVC video camera )
Is this now considered a known Bug in TVP 9.5.18 and the problem is currently being addressed by TVP development team or ... ?
The lack of an answer regarding this issue is disconcerting.

Re: Canon : TV Paint Application Crash
I think it's really a bug. I installed my TV paint into another computer, windows 7 vaio and it's still giving the same results.
I'm still waiting for the development team's response if they will give a fixing update or information on what should I do. But I haven't got any answer yet.

Hello, are you using Windows 7 32 bits or Windows 7 64 bits ? It could help us to know more.
Sorry for the lack of answers, we were pretty busy with the Anima festival. We will try to help as best as we can from now.

Re: Canon : TV Paint Application Crash
We had some trouble with grabbing HD-DV from Firewire in the past, but it should be solved now.
If you can set the output resolution for your camera, please try to change it.
An other interesting test would be to try the software and the camera on a 32 bits OS. (ok, it should work on 64 bits OS, but such details are useful for the dev team)

Re: Canon : TV Paint Application Crash
Fabrice,
If this issue is resolved, do I need to somehow refresh my version of TVP? I have TVP 9.5, and am using a Panasonic camcorder attached by firewire to shoot some drawings, based on your online tutorial on how to shoot stop motion. The weird thing is, this has worked for me in the past, and now it is crashing every single time I try to capture the frame.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Re: Canon : TV Paint Application Crash
Hello,
Please can you try to reset your configuration ?
( Edition > Preferences > + activate the "startup panel" in the last tab ) then restart the software and create a new config or delete the current one.
Also, there is ( Help > Check for update ) to make sure you have the 9.5.18 version of the product.

Is that the fix for the video capture crashing issue , to create new config each time in Startup Panel ? As you can imagine this is a huge issue for me in giving advice to my online students using video capture in TVP for stop-motion and traditional pencil testing.
If the fix is to have Preferences set to "Startup Panel" instead of "Last Project Settings" or "Template" then would it be possible to update current version of TVP (9.5.18) so that the DEFAULT preference setting is always set on "Startup Panel" to avoid confusion ?

Indeed, it's not intended to be a final solution/recommendation for your students. I just wanted to make sure that the bug was not linked with the current configuration of the software.
Having the "Default preference setting is always set on" is an option we plan to add in the future, because it was asked several time by teachers.

I am also experiencing this same problem using TVPaint 9.5 and Canon ZR960. Has anyone resolved this issue yet?

According to David Nethery teaching at the AAU, the problem was not here in a previous version of our product.
Please can you send a PM to "Elodie" with your license/dongle number :
She will upload an old version just for you, so you will help us to do some tests, and with your help, we might find where the problem comes from.
