Salvadore Dali finally got what he was asking for What a perfect match!

Destino is included on the recently released 'Fantasia/Fantasia 2000' Special Edition box set (BluRay). As well as a documentary about Dali+Disney.

I don't know how close it came to Dali's vision. I don't know that it really matters. I saw it at a museum exhibit, with storyboards and concept art-and it seems OK for what it is, but not quite what it would have been had it been produced under Dali's guidance. Certainly wouldn't have included computer animation.

What did they say when you called the 800 number to report unauthorized use? I guess that YouTube is OK with the Disney Corporation?

I don't know much about Dali but judging from the style of his paintings i'd guess he would have loved working with the aid of Computers.

I don't doubt that Dali would have used and appreciated computers. But, if there was digital animation at the time the film was designed, I think it would have been a different film. What Destino ended up being is generations removed from the original intent. Someone else's interpretation, fifty years later. It's more of a remake of something that barely existed in the first place. The CG bits were evident, and distracting.

Fantasia vs. Fantasia 2000 seems a good example of the difference between the two eras. The Disney regurgitation machine did a marvelous job of chewing up the original and spitting out some unappetizing pulp. I don't doubt that Destino got a similar mastication treatment.

Who knows, maybe Dali would have been thrilled with what they did. Maybe not. It's not bad for what it is, but I think it would have been better if it had been finished in the 40's or 50's. The concept art and story boards that I saw held promise of something more. Doesn't matter. It's all academic at this point.

I said they deserve each other because I believe that Dali was an immensely overrated artist and borderline kitsch maker, as was Disney. Dali was one of the first artists who couldn't have existed without the media (followed later by Warhol and Christie and the like). I am sure he would have gone right along with this, unless he could do better for himself by putting up a show of agitation.
