In my opinion it is meaningless to turn to the film industry for clarifications.
I Don't agree. We are In the Film Industry and we should try to choose the word that fits the most
If a word exists Instead of inventing new words or give it a word new meaning.
Thats why we got languages
But its true there is no standard
So let's turn to Wikipedia and see whats the best word 'Clip' or 'Shot'
CLIP:
List of different meanings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clip
The one who fits the best
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_clip
It Says
Video clips are short clips of video, usually part of a longer piece. The term is also more loosely used to mean any short video less than the length of a traditional television program.
SHOT:
List of different meanings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot
The one who fits the best
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_%28filming%29
a part of a film between two cuts
This clearly shows that Shot is much stronger and better word than clip.
Clip simply doesn't mean
"a continuous strip of motion picture film"
or
"a part of a film between two cuts"
So We could as well call it "Hat" or "Beetle" or Even "MadsJuul" maybe
OK seriously I think it would be much better to call it 'Shot' than 'Clip'
Now look at the word Sequence vs Scene
Scene:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scene_%28film%29
Sequence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequence_%28filming%29
Scene is a very Ambiguous word and thats the reason why we shouldn't use it.
I have always avoided using it in my productions. Because when a script writer talks about scenes he mean something else than a Maya 3d Animator
I would prefer
- Project
- Sequence
- Shot
But We have to respect the names that TVpaint uses. And anyways that we have the same definition or that we now where the definitions is different is the most important.
This is my Definitions.
-Project: Collection of Scenes limited either by some larger story structure or by the physical Strength of you computer or how you like to organize your work.
-Scene: a series of clips which form a distinct narrative unit, usually connected either by unity ofocation or unity of time.
-Clip: "a part of a film between two cuts"
-Mads
