Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
Hi,
I'm pretty new on TVPaint. I'm planning to do my next project with it, it's a promo on workshops for children(refugees).
I already searched the forum and faq page but couldn't find the answer for it.
Here it goes. I'm drawing with the chalk tool for animating the characters, looks very nice and realistic. Later on i want to use floodfill to color the characters. But when i use chalk (or charcoal) with the floodfill, the colours become pale.
When i switch to pencil or paint for comparison the colours become vivid again. Is there something i'm doing wrong. Or is it just not possible? I'm stuck, because i have to know for sure this is gonna work.
Thanks!
Niek

Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
Can illustrate with some screengrabs?
it will help us narrow the options as of why you are getting this result.

First head is filled using the floodfill with Chalk and second one using floodfill with the Pen Brush. Excuse me for the images being so BIG...

O yeah, and when i color in the head with chalk as a pencil it is o.k. Just when i want to use the floodfill (for faster workflow) it isn't what you would expect. I just want to be able to fill things with a chalk texture. So:
With freehandline (chalk) selected:

versus
With Floodfill (chalk) selected

I hope this makes things clearer!? By the way Asaf, "Bus Ride and Flowers in Her Hair" is awesome!

Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
Have you tried and use some paper texture? That works best with a flood fill, IMO. It takes some testing to get a good result, but then it's always consistent.
I'd recommend you do a solid flood fill (on a separate layer) first, then on another layer your chalk texture. This way your characters don't become transparent in front of a BG. (There was a thread about colouring in separate layers somewhere.)

Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
because the enable paper, in a way, alpha-protects the canvas , so your green color is never fully spread at 100% opacity.
if you want to enhance the painted green, create a separate color layer (keep the line layer on front) ,
then floodfill (with source = front) and hit the [enter] key twice (or more) to repeat the action,
or better, floodfill once, then, when all the animation colored, apply an Histogram_fx correction
on the alpha chanel, to put the highest level at the maximum (100% opacity) .
+1 for slowtiger's method and recommendation too .

Hey,
Thanks for the advice guys, makes a lot of sense.
I will try it out as soon as possible (don't have the software here) and report my findings.
thnx!

Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
Praxis, why don't you update TVP Animation ? O_o
You are still using the 9 version !

Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
OK,
I experimented a bit, when i choose chalk pencil there automatically is a paper texture applied.
I get what you mean with the paper texture in combination with the flood fill. But i'm not really sure about "I'd recommend you do a solid flood fill (on a separate layer) first, then on another layer your chalk texture" . So on one layer a paper texture and on another the chalk texture. But chalk is a tool, not a texture??
ZigOtto. You suggest to click more often to get more colour intensity out of the chalk tool? That is a way. But there is some sort of repetition in the texture that becomes more clear when you click more often.
And to put an Histogram_fx correction, which layer do you put it on? You say the "Alpha channel" , but which one?
Sorry for my late reply. But at this moment i'm not able to work with tvpaint that often, cause we have only one dongle at work
Thnx!

Update your softpraxis wrote:And to put an Histogram_fx correction, which layer do you put it on? You say the "Alpha channel" , but which one?!
Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
If that will answer my question better, any other input?
I will ask (my work) if they wanna update.

Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
on your color (fill) layer, of course, the one looking too pale for your taste and you want to boost/intensify, ... what else ?praxis wrote:...And to put an Histogram_fx correction, which layer do you put it on?
the Alpha Tab in the Histogram_FX (the last one) : Luminosity | Red | Green | Blue | Alphapraxis wrote:... You say the "Alpha channel" , but which one?
yes, update your old v9.0, ... urgently !!!praxis wrote:... I will ask (my work) if they wanna update.
you should work on a v9.5.18 to be up-to-date and to get a full support here .
Re: Using Floodfill with Chalkpencil
Well, i dove into it. Spend some hours with the user manual. I understand your explanation a lot better now Zigotto, thanks!
But...we updated the software to the latest version. And now the Chalktool is gone!!! It used to be within the classic tool panel.
I already used it for a part of the animation, so i really want it back. Could you tell me how to fix this?
I don't wanna do a system restore to get back to my previous version
Thnx
