Good luck in your search! Not familiar with any used tablets under that range.. I'd keep your eyes out in the future though. I think Microsoft is under pressure to release some very svelte ipad competition, and word is all their tablets will run full windows 7, not the iphone toy OS.

I'm also fairly confident that you'll see wacom capacitive dual touch / pen digitizer combo svelte looking tablets hit the market within the year.

I used the Motion LE1600 for years. The guy I sold it to just completed a comic on it and says it is still his main drawing rig to this day. I could draw as fast as I wanted on it, with no lag, but that was with Mirage. I haven't tried anything more powerful on it yet.

My question is this: Are there any comparable tablets out there today? I see Motion now has the J3500 as their main tablet. The tablets seem to all be going with dual touch interfaces, I guess to compete with iPhone or iPad. Does this hinder the pen quality at all?

I absolutely hate convertible Tablet PCs and want just a screen and a pen. I wish there was a solution available for OS X, since I heard the Modbooks are heavy and have considerable lag.

Also, is there a real advantage to just getting a laptop and a Cintiq 12WX? I mean, a Macbook and a Cintiq 12WX would be cheaper than most high end Tablet PC options available right now.

I personally use a Macbook Pro 13" and Cintiq 12WX as my only workstation. Thanks to TVPaint relying on the CPU instead of GPU, I haven't experienced any technical problems whatsoever. My only complaint is that my workstation isn't mobile. I move around a lot; one day I'll be in Los Angeles, then I'll jump to Vancouver, then Berlin just for the fun of it. During the flights and hotel stays, I wish for a one-piece tablet that doesn't require two power outlets (and sometimes adaptors), all of my USB ports, a control brick, and a display cable that needs an adaptor. It just won't fit on most café tables and it takes so long to setup that I lose interest in the work.

Before I could afford a Cintiq, I built a similar device from an old monitor and my Graphire tablet. It was buggy, but easier to use than the Graphire alone (and it mapped better than the Cintiqs available at the time). Considering my constant moving, I'm going to try to splice my Macbook and Cintiq together. If I can get it to work, I'll offer mod-service to anyone here.

I'll keep you posted.

Scratch that. Due to power issues with the 12WX, I can't get it to play nice with a Macbook unless I build a massive permanent fixture (or risk the destruction of both devices). If I were using a 21UX, It would work flawlessly, but that wouldn't exactly be a "mobile" solution, would it? I guess for the time being, I should go back to looking for a good Linux tablet.

When you say scratch that, you're talking about splicing them together has problems, right? Separately, the Macbook Pro 13" and Cintiq 12WX is a good Combo? I would mostly use it at home or in the office, or in hotel rooms when I travel, not in coffee shops, so for me Mobile just means it fits in my luggage. If they are a good combo, that's where I am headed.

By "scratch that," I do mean that splicing them together didn't work out well. I would still recommend this setup just as long as you don't intend to work on a plane, in a café, or in certain Japanese hotel rooms. The setup will take approximately 90 centimetres of table width if you want to use both displays to their fullest, so be prepared.

By the way, the entire setup fits nicely into my briefcase, so it will be fairly portable when traveling.

Wait, ArtFX, I've been looking to sell my Cintiq. I'll be upgrading soon, so I can sell it to you at a lower price than the competitor. Let me know if you're interested.

I'm interested. When are you thinking about upgrading? I won't know where I stand until early September.

Early September works for me. Just for your peace of mind, this tablet hasn't been opened. The aforementioned experiment with it was purely schematic.

Send me a PM when you're ready to proceed.
