Wacom Cintiq 12WX

Post by Cathy »

Hello everyone. I've been shamelessly lurking and hope you'll forgive me.

I've been researching the Wacom Cintiq 12WX for possible purchase and was wondering if anyone here has one?

2 things that I've found off-putting are reports that there is a heat problem in the lower right-hand area of the screen and that there is screen-jitter around the edges. But there is nothing like first-hand knowledge - so I was hoping to find someone who actually uses one and get their take on it.

I am an Intuos 3 user and have no complaints. It's just that the idea of drawing directly on the screen is very appealing to me.

Thanks in advance.

My best advice is to go out to your nearest Apple store and try one of the Cintiqs on display.
Nothing beats the hands on.

Other than that, edge jitter and heating up in the lower-right corner are very similar to what I experience on my TabletPC (gateway), which is not a Cintiq, but it is a wacom digitizer panel. But edge problems are typical even on the bigger Cintiq models. I guess it's a flawed technology in that sense.

One thing I'd make sure with the Cintiq is that it gives you Tilt and Altitude recognition. Without it it's not worth the spend.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know that Apple stores had Wacom Cintiq demos - good information.

Yes - I have followed your experiences with the Cintiq with great interest Paul. It was the first thing I searched for because I remember you talking about it years ago.

It's funny - but what has really put me off this morning is that I serendipitously discovered that the illustration used in Wacom's video ad for the Cintiq 12WX was ACTUALLY made in 2007 on an Intuos 3. I found this to be rather deceptive.

I have different experiences with the 12ux which I am not using for my current wip anymore. I hate the cable tangle it produces and as I am working most times with a mobile laptop it is not useful in this setup. This may change when it goes wireless. It may sound impious but I switched back to the smallest Intous 3 - gave the bigger Intous and the UX to my son who is now going paperless.
Against all arguments the DIN A 4 Intous 3 does sensitive drawings for me.

Thanks Klaus.

I called both Apple stores in my area and neither has the Cintiq for demo. I think they are preparing for the *NEXT BIG THING* iPad tablet to come out and don't want any competition.

Indeed : http://www.wacom.com/index2.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The new version of the Cintiq 21" is coming up. :)

But you are right. You have surely to try one out before spending your money. And if possible: during a few hours!
I was also crazy about cintiq's... And when i finally got one (a 12") , i was a bit disapointed. Actually i draw on an intuos 4, which i prefere above the cintiq.
