Technical setup questions for Wacom Tablet ( Cintiq )

Post by scholar »

Hiya I've been reading the manual but couldn't figure these out:

1) Touch Strip: I want it to zoom. Right now it changes the brush size.
If i set it to 'Zoom' in the Wacom properties dialog, it doesnt do anything.
The closest I could achieve was to set it to keystrokes (< , > ) which increment the zoom, but what I really want is the smooth zoom, what you get by Alt+ Rightclick drag.

2) Drag/Pan the screen: I would like to be able to pan the screen with Pen's Rightclick drag ? It doesn't have to be Rightclick, but the same 'button' on the Tablet pen.I tried mapping that button to Alt, in the Wacom Properties, but then that interferes with Zoom.

3) Smoothing: so far I couldn't find any controls on applying smoothing onto the Wacom input ? Ie a certain degree of auto smoothing on each stroke ? Is this possible?

Its not that I have any problems with the default setup, but If you are using 3 different graphics applications, then you really start to appreciate some kind of consistency as far as getting around.
Thanks

Hi Scholar, welcome to the TVPaint Community =)
scholar wrote:1) Touch Strip: I want it to zoom. Right now it changes the brush size.
It's normal, if I remember well, the default settings in the wacom touch strip are + or -
And in TVP animation + and - change the brush size.

Well, it's alt + Right click drag or "> / <" to zoom. Two options for zoom are sufficient, so you will have to be used to the first or the second option =)

Well... so set the second pen's button as alt, or set the right click as alt and use the "< >"...
You can also use 4/8/6/2 to pan the workspace.

On the wacom : change the pressure sensibility
On TVP animation : you can edit the pressure profile here :
edit pressure.jpg

What are those other softwares ? Maybe can we help you to configure your wacom more comfortable :D

Unfortunately, this doesn't work. As Scholar points out, setting the pen button to 'Alt' causes the pen button/drag combination to operate the Zoom function. I haven't been able to find a workaround for this either, as I like to use pen button/drag as a Pan control too. It's how I have Photoshop and all my other graphics apps set up.

That's fun, when I was used Photoshop, I only use "ctrl" to pan, and "ctrl" was set on my tablet. On TVP animation, I only changed the button as "alt' and not "ctrl" anymore.

Concerning the "alt, it works on my Mac : if I set the right click button as "Alt", I don't have any problem =)
If you want to zoom with the alt button + right click, you can set a wacom tablet's button as a right click.

And you cannot tell me it doesn't work, because it does  Now, I'm testing on Intuos, not on Cintiq, so maybe there are some differences =)

Ah - maybe it's a Mac/PC thing then. I am using an Intuos on a PC and if I set either of my pen buttons to 'Alt' they Zoom rather than Pan.

Did you make this change on "Others" or only for "TVP animation" ?

I will try tonight at home with my personnal PC and Intuos 3 :D

Until TVPaint developers include some kind of smoothing option (maybe in 9.5.2?) you might like to try LazyNezumi, a simple, free plugin for windows that works well with TVPaint AND many other drawing/painting apps.

Here's the thread that has a link to download Kamih's LazyNezumi program...

I made the change only for TVP.

Wacom Preferences > Tool: Grip Pen > Application: TV Paint > Pen > Side Switch > Modifier... > Alt

Thanks for the help, by the way. it is greatly appreciated. :)

I suppose you wanted to say "9.5.12", didn't you ?

Thanks for the responses!

Byron:, maybe its just me, but the dragging/panning with rightlcick still doesnt work? Or if it still doesnt work for you too why did you post this:

Wacom Preferences > Tool: Grip Pen > Application: TV Paint > Pen > Side Switch > Modifier... > Alt

also you meant 'Right Click' ? Or Options and 'Side Switch' options ?

Either way, it still zooms.

Thanks for the LazyNezumi, that looks really promising.

Shame about the zoom feature.

No - It doesn't work for me either. I was just posting exactly how I had it set up, in response to Elodie's question. I can see how my post was confusing - sorry.

Oops, I thought it worked !

That's strange because it works on my iMac and Intuos 3...

On which Windows OS are you both ?

EDIT : found the problem ! Update your wacom drivers :D
I've made a try on a XP and you were right : the right pen button as alt didn't work and zoom (instead of doing nothing). After updating the wacom drivers, I don't have any problem : the right pen button as alt and wacom tablet's button as right click do perfectly work now =)

Assigning Alt to the side-switch will you give you either Zoomin, or Panning separately, but not both at the same time.
If you want zooming, well, you already figured out how to do it.
If you want panning, go to Edit > Preferences and uncheck the "Subpixel" option.
Now you'll have panning instead of zooming, minus the often useful subpixel-drawing option.

The problem is that Alt is hardcoded in TVP. whether you Alt+LMB to pan, or Alt+RMB to zoom, you always end up touching pen to tablet surface, and then drag. If the Grip Pen allowed BOTH side switches to be pressed together at the same time, you would have been able to assign Alt to one of them, right-click to the other, and when pressing only the Alt you'd be able to pan, and pressing both will give you zoom.

This could be changed also if something could change in the way the pen interacts with TVP: If it was possible to hover your pen above the tablet without touching it's tip to the surface, and then pressing ALT while hover-moving the pen would give you panning, it would have also been possible to press the side-switch while hover-moving the pen to zoom in. I think this is possible, since hover + side-switch is already working as right-click when subpixel is off.

If any of this is written to cumbersome, let me know and I'll try to reiterate.

It seems the problem comes from the second pen button (basically associates to "double click"), combined to the subpixels mode.
This second pen's button will be disable in the next version of TVP animation 9.5 to fix your problem

It works! :D :D :D

I d/loaded the latest Wacom driver (I'm running XP) and installed it, but unfortunately I still got zoom instead of pan. However, turning off sub-pixel mode fixed that for me, and I can now pan with the side switch in TVP. I haven't noticed a difference in detail/accuracy with sub-pixel mode off - maybe my GFX card (ATI Radeon HD3850) doesn't support it. I'm not entirely sure what sub pixel mode does.

Anyway - thanks again for the support.

:)
