tvpaint takes 1-2 hours to safe my project

Post by torque »

hi again!

Im working on a project (lipsync) which has one videofile (3min - 100mb compressed) and 10 little psd´s.

the saved tvp-project is 1,2 gb big. if i want to save it again (for safety, save oder save as) it takes about 1-2hours to save.

why? what can i do? some mysterious keycombinations? ;)

thanks people for taking time to answer :)

I don't know if it's your case, but if you load/save "with dependency", the video won't be re-recorded,
but only the video file path will be saved in the project file,
in that way => smaller project's weight, and faster to save.

btw, why did you load the whole 3mn video ?
is the lipsynch you have to do so long ..?

The numbers seem odd to me. I had a project of 8 GB (2,5 minutes in HD), and saving did take some time, but not longer than 10 - 15 minutes.

Saving speed highly depends on your harddrive configuration. The fastest will always be do copy from one harddrive to another (two physical drives, not just volumes on the same disk). Slowdown occurs if you want to write onto the same drive you copy from, like two volumes on the same disk. TVP uses one disk as a scratch disk, you should avoid to use the same disk to write to.

Do you have an anti-virus/firewall running in the background?
If you do, does it do real-time file scanning?
And if so, make sure it does not scan TVP, DEEP (DIP) and other TVP related files.

As well, I personally recommend working with shorter projects. It makes life easier.

hello,
thanks for helping.

sure, i could use smaller videofiles. but as i have to do lipsync for nearly the whole 3min for 2 characters, it would be nice to just have the whole file.

i think the key would be this dependency-thing. but I´m running tvpaint in german and cant find the setting. i only use the 5-10 mouthpositions and that video, so it wouldnt be necessary to store the files in the project.

there is no antivir running. isnt 3 min short?

When you import video footage, just check "PreLoad" directly under the path of that file.

thanks,
i reimported the footage and now it works!

but, now i have to "move imported video footage" by using the "secret handshake" method again, which Im trying to avoid.

to the developers, dont know if this information helps:

i tried today to save my project (no preload - 60mb) to another name (save as), but he tried to save it with preload again, (800mb filesize). i had to shut down tvpaint (abort save didnt work), reopen the project and just "save as" again and it worked.

i had to do this procedure in 4 other tvpaint projects now - it NEVER works the first time i import the video.

here is my disgusting workflow:

- import video.
- move the video, wait 10 minutes till he moved it.
- (try to) save
- he wants to take 20 minutes, so i cancel
- delete video layer
- import again
- move again
- wait 10 minutes again
- save again
- now the file has the preload activated.

Just tested. I had a 2,5 min PAL video file with PNG compression, 2,2 GB file size. In an empy TVP file it got imported in 7 minutes - "pre-load" checked. Saving this file took 4 mintes, it was 4,5 GB large. Opening this new file again took 7 minutes, again.

I could easily grab the whole video layer and move it in time, and whatever frame I clicked, the image was there immediately. But the saved file's size doesn't look much like a linked video. In this respect I have other programs which are faster.

what do you mean exactly by "move" the video ?
is it offset (X, Y) in the canvas area, or is it offset it (t) on the timetine, ... or something else ?
and why (what for) to move it ? if you explain in depth what's your goal, and the workflow you think the right one,
maybe we will have some other (alternative) way to suggest you, but without more details on what you're trying to achieve, what config (hardware, OS, temp directory/partition, undo cache size ...) you are running, it's difficult to help you with effective advices ...

definitively something wrong in your workflow ... :?
I'm curious, are you rotoscoping with the video file as template ?
do you need the video in the final display of your scene, or it won't have to be visible ?
what the framerate of your video, and the framerate of your project ? are you animating in 2's ?
btw, if you have to "modify" the video layer, (draw, FX, KeyFrame, re-time ...),
I think you need to preload it first.

hi,

thanks for answering,

slowtiger, thanks for testing. with or without preload - it is a gig big and takes 20-90 minutes to save. depending on what scene Im working on. because, if Im working on the first 10 secs i can import video by selecting the outmarker earlier, but for the last scenes i have to import the whole thing, BECAUSE he doesnt import sound and video together. i couldnt put them together exactly if i set the inmarker later.

video format is quicktime mov HD 100mb no/preload tested both.

with move i mean move x;y on the screen. its the function slowtiger explained in another thread of mine. its not used for further animation, just as background, so i can see the scene. but as the head with the mouth is in the middle of the screen, i need the video on the side, so i can see both, the video and the head with mouth.

Im working on an 2x2,66dualcore 8gb ram something mac. i think the computer shouldnt be the reason. on the other macs we got her its the same problem.

just for example, in the scene Im working on right now, i saved every 10-15 minutes. but now, after saving 5-6times, he wants to take an hour again. i have to delete the video, fuck around with importing moving deleting importing moving deleting again till it works again.

what video size (WxH) ? the same size that your project ?

well, I don't get how do you work, if the video is the (moving?) background, when animating over it, on a separated animlayer, can't you see the BG through (behind) the line drawings ?

so you're working on macs, you should have started with that ..!
clearly I can't help further as I am only on PC, ... what's your tvpa Temp directory setting (if a temp directory does exist in your mac world) ? maybe the tvpa "Mac" version still have a problem with memory management ...? how could I know, ... I'm mac allergic ! ... anyway, good luck to you ! :)

thanks for taking time :)

I am not a mac-user too :)

>>well, I don't get how do you work, if the video is the (moving?) background, when animating over it, on a separated animlayer, can't you see the BG through (behind) the line drawings ?

basically its like that, its just a bit difficult to see if i dont move the video in the corner. i suggest its a simple function, but as it turns out to be that difficult i will never try to move a animatic layer again.

well, I dont care anymore. without moving the video the file is 23mb. i guess Im just too used to simple functions like moving a layer. 2min´s of lipsync, then its done. to be honest, there is not much left i want to do with tvpaint. it all sorts out itself.

there are actually two very simple solutions for your problem, i can think of.

but i'm wondering if i should bother to write them down ?
