Just taking 12.0.3 for a test run and noticed when you are hovering over a drawing with your stylus(no contact on the tablet screen) and do a right click it erases a single brush stamp where you are currently hovering. Previously in older versions you need to actually press down with the stylus to start erasing.
I imagine this is related to the patch note
[WACOM TABLETS] Hover click mode now works in Wintab + Subpixel mode
and maybe its intended behaviour, if so is there a way to disable it?
edit: Nevermind, I jumped the gun and see this is an option under Wacom properties, I didnt realize it before since it wasn't working I guess. Leaving this up in case anyone else has the issue and is wondering. You need to set Wacom Advanced settings Pen button mode to Click & Tap instead of Hover Click.

I will second this problem. This was however discussed already many times. The problem is that it got worse with recent Wacom updates and with TVP12 on Mac it became a real issue (I will post this in a separate thread). Switching off the hover option in Wcom settings is very annoying, because then in order to zoom or pan I always have to click on the screen, which is really counter intuitive and less productive...

Just a quick update: it seems this issue is caused by the latest Wacom driver (version 6.4.10-3 seems to be the culprit) which doesn't send proper pressure information to TVPaint (it is always set to a very small number, no matter what). Reverting to an older version of their driver such as version 6.4.9-2 should do the trick.
I actually was using that version 6.4.9-2 originally, as I didn't notice there was an update. I rolled back my driver even further to 6.4.8-6, and after some testing it seems like at some point this was changed as in 12.0.5 it is not happening with the original erased bit while hovering. If I go back to version 12.0.3 it is happening, same settings and driver.
But, this brings up another question, what is the bug that this original patch note refers to that is fixed? [WACOM TABLETS] Hover click mode now works in Wintab + Subpixel mode
Or put another way, what specifically what should the desired behaviour of Hover Click + wintab + subpixel be?
I assumed it is supposed to behave as other programs do and allow you to click while hovering, which would in theory cause the eraser effect I originally posted, so I didn't think it was actually a bug anymore. However it doesn't allow you to continually erase, so I was also just confused as to what was going on. If the intention is that hover + click now allows you to zoom/pan, that does not work for me in any version still.
However, I've discovered a new problem that has been plaguing me in 12.0.5(I tested and it's there in 12.0.4 too) that seems related. There now seems to be an issue introduced with this same action set. If I hold alt + use my right-click(mapped to wacom rocker button) and press down all at the same time it does not enabled me to zoom like it did in 12.0.3 and previous, it will "hang" on eraser. This seems to be a problem with "alt," as if I have the spacebar set to interface: Panning & Zoom(held) this doesn't occur.
For what it's worth If I got back to 12.0.3 this also doesn't occur, but the originally mentioned behaviour with a single erased dot still does. If I go back to 12.0.1, neither of these bugs occurs. This is all tested with wacom 6.4.8-6, 6.4.9-2, and briefly looks like it occurs with the latest update, 6.4.10-3, though I only took a quick look.
One last interesting note I noticed, if in 12.0.3, if you are in the middle of a swipe with your stylus and use right click while holding alt while its moving, you get a slight zoom(more or less depending how quick you are going) in or out depending on whichever direction you are moving. Not sure if that is relevant or helpful, but interesting as I think the desired outcome would be for hover + click to enable zooming like it does if subpixel is off.

Since the fix was added, TVPaint should allow the user to use their stylus' side button while using hover click, as these button are often bound to right click, indirectly triggering the right-click erase mode.
"Hover click" needs to be enabled in the tablet's driver, though.
I have tested all the TVP12 versions you listed with the settings you listed and hover click works as expected every time on my part when used for "ALT" zooming, however this testing allowed us to notice that TVPaint outputs the actual pressure from the user's stylus when hovering, aka 0, because as you already guessed: the stylus' tip is not touching the tablet when hovering!
So the solution would be forcing a certain base level of pressure/power when TVPaint detects that the pen is hovering above the tablet. And this would need to be togglable.
I will notify the devs about this.
