Canicas (TVPaint + 3ds Max)
Canicas (TVPaint + 3ds Max)
Hello guys, finally I can share the trailer for our short Canicas.
I set this as a challenge several years ago to see if we could do something similar to Paperman while mixing it with a traditional 2D background NPR rendering but still get that 2D feeling of the hand-drawn variation in lines and volume preservation without going too crazy with the 1's, 2's and digital computer inbetweening.
We developed several tools for integration of the 3D renderings into TVpaint for things like reworking animation, silhouettes, most of the clothes are hand animated while the bodies are full CG.
A retiming tool for xsheet importing from Maya to TVPaint along with renderpasses from 3dsmax to TVPaint.
Also a tool for importing camera data from Maya to TVPAINT.

Re: Canicas (TVPaint + 3ds Max)
Looks very promising. I like the colours a lot. The underlying 3D is not really visible, which is good, it doesn't stand out, I wonder if that's just because of the reduced frame rate of 12 or 8 per second?

Re: Canicas (TVPaint + 3ds Max)
Cool, mixing it up with 2's, 3's, and 4's, I love that this approach is finally getting more common after seeing it in anime for decades
Re: Canicas (TVPaint + 3ds Max)
That was exactly the idea to blend the 3D use to make it unnoticeable, I'm very happy it works
It was a mix of modulated frames ,2s 3s and moving holds, all that in 3D and then the touchups and paintovers in 2D to make it look more organic.
Also the camera work was meant not to push the 3D feeling and avoid the "perfect" look that CG gives, so some errors/variations were added on purpose.
I'm planning to release a behind the scenes if people are interested in it, to show a bit of the work done for the short.

Yeah, actually I worked in Toei Animation Japan (One Piece Z), that's where I began getting the anime influence for the NPR and CG-Anime. It was a great ride and helped me to understand a bit better the frame modulation they use to make it look like a more natural 2D.InbetweenAdventures wrote: ↑14 Sep 2022, 15:45 Cool, mixing it up with 2's, 3's, and 4's, I love that this approach is finally getting more common after seeing it in anime for decades

Realy like it, you hit the sweet spot between fluid motion and recognizable single frames.

Apologies, it's public now for a few hours more (licensing limitations with our distributor in the US).
