Untitled Project... Autosave

Post by petescalzitti »

Hello everyone!

I just had that nightmare scenario- my laptop crashed, and although I had autosave set to every 2 minutes, I hadn't yet saved the project from it's "Untitled" state... and I can't find any autosaves anywhere for this untitled project.

Does TVPaint create autosaves for "Untitled" projects? I can't find it...

If not, sadly I think I just lost 3 hours of work if so... I thought I was a genius creating autosaves for every two minutes, but alas, because I didn't save the project for the first time/give it a name, is there no autosave for this?

Thanks in advance for any help, I'd love to get those 3 hours of work back!

If not- lesson learned... from now on I save the project IMMEDIATELY!

UPDATE- I found a temp file TVpaint created right before the crash in my User folder/AppData... but I TVPaint says it can't open this file...

I have a hope this has got to be some sort of temp save of my Untitled project before the crash... does anyone know if this could be true? It's 130 MB and was created 1 minute before my crash... it's file extension is .tmp

I tried changing the extension to .tvpp.tmp like some of the autosave files I can see from other projects, but when I try to open, TVPaint says "Can't open file (then the filename)"

Is there anyway to force this temp file into being a TVPaint project?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello petescalzitti,
Have you tried to change the extension to .tvpp (without the .temp), it could maybe works.

Thank you for the thought, Leo!

I tried that and unfortunately it didn't work. I opened the file with notepad and also an autosave from a different project to compare the code, and the two files look pretty different. Also, I know nothing about coding!

So I decided to bite the bullet and redo the shot. The redo was much faster than 3 hours since I knew what I needed to do.

But lesson learned- even if you have auto-save set up, always save the project right after creating it!

Indeed the best solution is to save a first time your project to "launch" the auto-save, I advise you to also enable the Multi-Backup, to have a a security backup.
I hope you will recover fast all your lost work.

Exactly!
Once you get over the frustration this is also my experience, the second time you can work much quicker and the result is often even better.
but the frustration is real.
and you never want this to happen.
so lesson learned, save regularly...
