How to best achieve a lineless animation look
Years ago our valued friend Nathan posted an issue that i can't remember being solved.
In this thread :https://forum.tvpaint.com/viewtopic.php?p=86795#p86795
Was this solution ever implemented?
so to recap the issue with the Color/Expand FX (FXstack)
you can make the coloring grow outward in the correct color and so color the lines
but you end up with a somewhat bloated shape because the line width gets added to the profile
But When you simply leave out the lines it leaves the silhouette to thin
i did find this Gobelin Custom panel
added here:
but i'm not sure how to use it and what it was specifically intended for.

Re: Approach for lineless Animation
Pardon me, certainly no expert here, and may have misunderstood your question? If so, my mistake.
Might a work around be,
If you have drawn the lines on one layer,,
then make a copy of that layer ( call it Lines copy),
Use the original to fill the colour areas as required,
Switch to the lines copy layer, and turn on the stencil option,
Use that to add the coloured lines to the layer with the coloured areas,
Then either hide or delete the lines copy layer before exporting ?
I've used that method a couple of times with the standard edition of TVP.

You can always adjust the fill tool's expand to your taste. Trick: it still works with the line layer above set to 0% opacity ...
Another approach might be to animate the fills directly, without outlines. My friend Anita Bruneburg uses the shape tool for this, see examples:

EDIT: I'm sorry, just today Twitter decided to join the shitty ways of Facebook and Instagram and not allow wathing posts from outside without being logged in any more. I can't count how much I'd like to say FUCK YOU to Elon the Nazi Musk.

The fill tool can't really get into the narrow corners.slowtiger wrote: ↑30 Jun 2023, 14:39 You can always adjust the fill tool's expand to your taste. Trick: it still works with the line layer above set to 0% opacity ...

animating with the shapetool requires a very different approach and also tends to give you a different look
It can be a great option.
But i'm looking for a way to easily achieve a lineless look.
i found the CTG layer coloring does quite a good job with tight coloring that can be used for this.
but i thought there was also a way to recolor a linelayer using the undelying color layer.

That's a valid method.Simon W Edmondson wrote: ↑30 Jun 2023, 13:15 Pardon me, certainly no expert here, and may have misunderstood your question? If so, my mistake.

Did you know you can fill a drawing directly onto another layer using the source option in the fill tool?

|Peter.
Pardon my delayed response.
No I was unaware of that.
What does the process involve?
I'm presently using the stencil option to clean up and refine the drawings.
Learning by trial and error ( mainly error) if truth be told.

Re: Approach for lineless Animation
choosing above allows you to color on an empty layer below your line drawing.
if you also set an expand the color will nicely fold under the lines.
the advantage is that lines and coloring won't be destructively merged (meaning: its much easier to recolor without loosing parts of your lines)

Re: Approach for lineless Animation
Thank you Peter. I shall try that out with current scene.
I'm still on a steep learning curve with all the options, and likely to remain so for some while.
regards
simon
